Martin was born in Wimbledon, London. She grew up in a house "full of music" thanks to jazz loving parents. She cites Ella Fitzgerald´s Song Books as being a major influence which inspired her to major at singing at the Doris Holford Stage School and later to study singing in both New York and London. Her professional career started with her first engagement aged 19 which was singer in a hotel band in Bournemouth. After this she worked aboard the QE2, where she sang in the piano bar for two years.
Martin has since released 17 CDs with the label, collaborating with musical luminaries including Martin Taylor, John Martyn, Stephane Grappelli, Kenny Barron, Richard Rodney Bennett, Jim Mullen and Nigel Hitchcock on many of these recordings.
Claire Martin, CCOQFRSC (18 April 1914 – 18 June 2014) was the pseudonym of the Canadian writer Claire Montreuil.
Born in Quebec City, Quebec, she was educated at the Ursuline convent and by the Dames de la Congrégation. From 1945 to 1972, she lived in Ottawa and was a writer in residence at the University of Ottawa. From 1972 to 1982, she lived in France, before returning to Quebec.
In 2014 she celebrated her 100th birthday on 18 April and died on 18 June.
Honours
A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, she was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1984 in recognition for being "one of the most important writers of her generation in Canada". She was promoted to Companion in 2001. She was made an Officer of the National Order of Quebec in 2007.
Claire Martin is joined by her all-Swedish trio as she celebrates another career milestone: recording her twentieth album for Linn Records. Making their UK debut at Ronnie Scott’s in 2018, Martin and her trio have played to sell-out audiences in Sweden, London and Madrid. Martin’s fascination with Sweden’s vibrant jazz scene began a decade ago, and via a shared love of songs she has cultivated a unique chemistry with her trio over the past two years. Uppsala-born pianist/arranger Martin Sjöstedt leads the trio comprising bassist Niklas Fernqvist and drummer Daniel Fredriksson. Sjöstedt, one of Sweden’s most gifted and talked about jazz musicians, has created imaginative new arrangements of contemporary material exclusively for Martin. Encompassing a century’s worth of tunes, tracks include...

I make a date for golf, you can bet your life it rains
I try to throw a party and the guy upstairs complains
I guess I'll go through life
Just catchin' colds and missin' trains
Everything happens to me
I never miss a thing
I've had the measles and the mumps
And every time I play an ace
My partner always trumps
I guess I'm just a fool who never looks before she jumps
Everything happens to me
At first I thought you could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick and end despair
But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air
I've telegraphed and phoned
I send an "Airmail Special" too
Your answer was "Goodbye"
And there was even postage due
I fell in love just once
Then it had to be with you
Everything happens to me
~~~♫♫♫~~~
At first I thought you could break this jinx for me
That love would turn the trick and end despair
But now I just can't fool this head that thinks for me
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air
