The Church Where QUEENS Are BURIED Under Your Feet
The Tower of London is known today as a brutal site of imprisonment, torture and execution. But inside of the infamous fortress is the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, next to Tower Green where the execution scaffold was found. This is a beautiful church, but under the floor today are buried 3 of England's Queens. Anne Boleyn and Catherine Howard the two wives of Henry VIII who were executed at the Tower are buried today below the altar. Also nearby buried is Lady Jane Grey, the 9 Day Queen who was executed inside of the Tower by Bloody Mary I.
Many other people are buried inside the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, including Thomas Cromwell, Sir Thomas More, Bishop John Fisher, Jane Boleyn, Robert Devereux and many more influential Tudor and post Tudor people. When the church was renov...

DIGGING UP ANNE BOLEYN and others | Burials in the Chapel of St. Peter Ad Vincula | History Calling
In 1876, the Chapel of St. Peter Ad Vincula in the Tower of London was in need of serious repairs. This meant DIGGING UP ANNE BOLEYN and others who had been buried under its floor, including her brother, George Boleyn, sister-in-law Jane Boleyn and cousin (and fifth wife of Henry VIII) Queen Katherine Howard. In today’s History Calling video we’re going to look at what happened when the Victorians disturbed the burials in the Chapel of St. Peter Ad Vincula and at what the detailed description left of what were supposed to be Anne Boleyn’s remains can tell us about the woman herself, including some physical traits her daughter Elizabeth I may have inherited from her. The Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. The Tower of London = Burial place of 3 Queen's & 1700 others.
Never shown on the page before! As you're not really supposed to film in there.
The Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula, within the Tower of London. Burial place of Queen's Ann Boleyn - Catherine Howard - The 9 days Queen Lady Jane Grey + many many more. Quite pleased with this one, as I managed to film the high altar "under which the 3 Queen's are buried". A Beautiful Royal Chapel which has the distinction of being a Royal Particular. When the chapel was restored on the orders of Queen Victoria "the remains of over 1700 people were found under (the by that time) collapsing floor" the were laid in lead chests & placed with honor in the crypt" = behind the brown door next to the Yeoman Warders Memorial, where very very few people are allowed to go.
Hope you all enjoy, as this one is a first f...

The original foundation date and location for the chapel is unknown. The chapel has been destroyed, rebuilt, relocated and renovated several times. Some have proposed that the chapel was founded before the Norman conquest of England as a parish church, predating the use of the area as a fortification. Others have concluded the chapel was founded by Henry I (r. 1100–1135), and perhaps consecrated on 1 August 1110 on the feast of St Peter ad Vincula. The chapel would have been outside the Tower's original perimeter walls so that the king could be seen worshiping in public. It would have stood in contrast to the king's use of the more private St John's Chapel, established around 1080 by William I inside the White Tower.
St Peter ad Vincula had been a parish church for at least a century before it became the chapel for the inhabitants of the Tower in the middle of the thirteenth century in the reign of Henry III, and the crypt under the church was built at that time. On 10 December 1241, Henry III issued a writ of liberate to have the ecclesia sancti Petri infra ballium Turris nostrae London (church of St Peter within the bailey of our Tower of London) enhanced. The writ indicates that by 1241 the chapel had been brought within the Tower walls. This structure had two chancels, dedicated to St Mary, and to St Peter; the latter contained Royal stalls that were wainscoted and painted, and there were two altars dedicated to St. Nicholas and St. Katherine.
During the reign of Henry III, the church had an enclosed cell for an anchorite, which would have been directly attached or located nearby. Henry III supported the living expenses of at least three different recluses, both men and women, at the Tower's anchorhold: Brother William, Idonee de Boclaund (an anchoress), and Geoffrey le Hermit.
The chapel's dedication to "St Peter ad Vincula" has several possible meanings in the Norman-English context. The most obvious is in reference to the Liberation of Peter from prison, as first mentioned in Acts 12:3-19. The first prisoner of the Tower, Ranulf Flambard, the Norman Bishop of Durham, was incarcerated by Henry I on 15 August 1100.
The existing building was rebuilt for Henry VIII by the then Lieutenant of the Tower, Sir Richard Cholmondeley (whose tomb is in the Church), between 1519 and 1520, after a fire destroyed the church in 1512. The rebuilt chapel was probably designed by William Vertue.

When the church was renovated, over 1000 peoples remains were discovered and were then reburied. But if you visit the chapel today, you are walking above the remains of some of the most powerful people in the Tudor period.

In particular her skull will provide some tantalising extra details about the appearance of Anne Boleyn, for whom no contemporary portraits survive. We’ll also look at the evidence which suggests that this excavation was not the first to disturb the remains of the fallen queens and the others who lie beneath the chapel and at why no exhumation has taken place in the years since, nor is one likely. Finally we’ll consider how likely it is that the correct remains were identified and explore why Katherine Howard’s bones were not found. Other details about Anne Boleyn’s skeleton will also include a discussion of her height and even her finger bones. This video serves as a sequel to my previous videos entitled ‘Anne Boleyn’s execution: Hollywood vs History’ and ‘The death of Katherine Howard and Jane Boleyn’.

Hope you all enjoy, as this one is a first for the page ✌️
