The Christianization of Scandinavia took place between the 8th and the 12th centuries. The realms of Scandinavia proper, Denmark, Norway and Sweden, established their own Archdioceses, responsible directly to the Pope, in 1104, 1154 and 1164, respectively. The conversion to Christianity of the Scandinavian people required more time, since it took additional efforts to establish a network of churches. The Samis remained unconverted until the 18th century.
Although the Scandinavians became nominally Christian, it took considerably longer for actual Christian beliefs to establish themselves among the people. The old indigenous traditions that had provided security and structure were challenged by ideas that were unfamiliar, such as original sin, the Incarnation, and the Trinity. Archaeological excavations of burial sites on the island of Lovön near modern-day Stockholm have shown that the actual Christianization of the people was very slow and took at least 150–200 years, and this was a very central location in the Swedish kingdom. Thirteenth-century runic inscriptions from the merchant town of Bergen in Norway show little Christian influence, and one of them appeals to a Valkyrie.

How Christianity was Forced on the Germanic Peoples

The Germanic peoples underwent gradual Christianization in the course of late antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. By AD 700, England and Francia were officially Christian, and by 1100 Germanic paganism had also ceased to have political influence in Scandinavia. The Germanic peoples underwent gradual Christianization in the course of late antiquity and the Early Middle Ages. By AD 700, England and Francia were officially Christian, and by 1100 Germanic paganism had also ceased to have political influence in Scandinavia. Christianization began in the Roman Empire, continued through the Middle Ages in Europe, and in the twenty-first century has spread around the globe.

A shift in Christianization took place in 612 when the Visigothic King Sisebut declared the obligatory conversion of all Jews in Spain, contradicting Pope Gregory who had reiterated the traditional ban against forced conversion of the Jews in 591. The Franks first appear in the historical record in the 3rd century as a confederation of Germanic tribes living on the east bank of the lower Rhine River. Clovis I was the first king of the Franks to unite all of the Frankish tribes under one ruler.
Why did Christianity Fail in Asia while Succeeding in Europe?
From its center point in Judea, Christianity began its early spread through the surrounding countries of the Levant - what we know now as Israel, Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, and Cyprus. This led to the rollout into the Asian continent of Christianity as Antioch became a new home base for the faith after its evangelization allegedly by Peter the Apostle himself as well as Paul and Barnabas. Apostles Thaddaeus and Bartholomew and Simon and Andrew further evangelized Armenia and Georgia respectively as the span of the budding religion stretched further to the Eastern world; passing additionally through Mesopotamia and Parthia, and allegedly India as well on its way to the Far East.
