The Anglican diocese of Fredericton was established in 1845, with John Medley as its first bishop. Medley was a Tractarian and a proponent of Gothic Revival architecture. As a clergyman in the Diocese of Exeter he had supervised the restoration and building of several churches according to the Gothic Revival principles of the Eccelesiological Society, and had been the founder and secretary of the Exeter Ecclesiological Society. Ecclesiology held that new church buildings should imitate those of the 13th and 14th century Decorated Gothic period, which displayed three essential characteristics lacking in Fredericton's existing wooden parish church: "reality", which meant that the building's structural elements such as rafters must be visible; a large chancel clearly separate from the congregation; and open bench seats rather than box pews.
The cathedral is located in what is now downtown St. Louis, at the southeast corner of Thirteenth and Locust Streets. The main body of the church was built of Illinois sandstone, and its roof is of purple and green slate. It is basically a cruciform structure, with a tower projecting from the northern facade at the northwest corner. The base of the tower houses a baptistry, with a font of Italian marble.
A smaller sandstone chapel dates to 1893-95. From 1910-1912, a tower and porch were added of Indiana limestone.
The cathedral was built between 1859 and 1867, and designed by architect Leopold Eidlitz. The Gothic Revival structure was an expression of the city's sense of its significance as the United States expanded westwards. It was one of the earliest churches influenced by the revival within the Episcopal Church of early Christian practices and styles, which later was influenced by the Oxford Movement originating in England. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1994.
Christ Church Cathedral is the Anglicancathedral in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The church is located at 439 Queen Street in the northwest section of the city's downtown at the western end of Sparks Street on top of a promontory looking down to the Ottawa River.

Beginnings
From time immemorial, the Algonquin heartland has included the entire length of the Ottawa River, from its headwaters in north-central Quebec to its outlet near Montreal. The parish of Christ Church Bytown, now Christ Church Cathedral Ottawa, was established on unceded Algonquin territory that had been settled by European colonists. What follows is a summary of various highlights and milestones of the Cathedral's development in the post-settlement period.
Philemon Wright, a native of Woburn, Massachusetts, came to Canada in 1800. Making his way up the Ottawa River, and looking for a satisfactory place to settle, he finally came to the Chaudière Falls, and was pleased with the character of the land on the north side of the river, so he decided to settle there. In later years, the flourishing settlement of Wrightstown would become the village, then later the City of Hull, and finally the City of Gatineau. Following the War of 1812, the Township of March was set aside for retired military officers and men. It was situated further up river on the south side. In 1824, Nicholas Sparks crossed the river from then Hull and carved a home for himself out of the heavy timber on the high cliffs of the south shore. In doing so, he became the first citizen of what would later become Bytown, and much later, the City of Ottawa. Colonel John By and the Royal Engineers arrived two years later to build the Rideau Canal, connecting the Ottawa River with Lake Ontario.
The John Hossack House was a "station" on the Underground Railroad, and Ottawa was a major stop because of its rail, road, and river transportation. Citizens in the city were active within the abolitionist movement. Ottawa was the site of a famous 1859 extrication of a runaway slave named Jim Gray from a courthouse by prominent civic leaders of the time. Three of the civic leaders, John Hossack, Dr. Joseph Stout and James Stout, later stood trial in Chicago for violating the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.
It was created by the British North America Act of 1867. It consisted of the city of Ottawa. After 1872, there were two members elected in this electoral district.
In 1892, it was redefined to exclude the New Edinburgh district of the city. In 1903, it was redefined as the city of Ottawa, excluding Rideau Ward. In 1914, it was redefined to exclude Hintonburgh, Bayswater and Mechanicsville neighbourhoods as well as Rideau Ward. It continued to return two members.
In 1924, it was redefined as the city of Ottawa, excluding Rideau Ward and that part of the city lying west of a line beginning at the intersection of the Rideau Canal with the Canadian Pacific Railway in the south, and following the railway, Somerset Street, Bayswater Avenue, Bayview Road and Mason Street, to the Ottawa River.
The electoral district was abolished in 1933 when it was divided into Ottawa West and Ottawa East ridings.
