In music, a chorus effect (sometimes chorusing or chorused effect) occurs when individual sounds with approximately the same timbre, and very similar pitch converge and are perceived as one. While similar sounds coming from multiple sources can occur naturally, as in the case of a choir or string orchestra, it can also be simulated using an electronic effects unit or signal processing device.
Methods
When the effect is produced successfully, none of the constituent sounds are perceived as being out of tune. It is characteristic of sounds with a rich, shimmering quality that would be absent if the sound came from a single source. The effect is more apparent when listening to sounds that sustain for longer periods of time.
The chorus effect is especially easy to hear when listening to a choir or string ensemble. A choir has multiple people singing each part (alto, tenor, etc.). A string ensemble has multiple violinists and possibly multiples of other stringed instruments.
In spite of the name, most electronic chorus effects do not accurately emulate this acoustic ensemble effect. Instead, they create a constantly moving electronic shimmer.
This week on the JHS Show, we break down a complicated subject: modulation. By the end of this episode, you're going to understand how modulation works, why this effect goes by roughly a hundred different names and-- most importantly --you'll be better equipped to rock out with your own modulation pedal. You're welcome.

Flanger, Chorus and Flanger are very common effects. You're sure to find them in any DAW or in guitar pedal boards. They create very distinctive sounds, but it is not always clear what it does exactly to the sound.
Today I'd like to dive a little bit in that and show how these common but mysterious effects are actually very close to a delay effect.
I hope it inspire you to explore and experiment with them as it sure did inspire me when I wrote this episode.

The CE-2w is a reissue of the original CE-2 that came out in 79’. The main characteristics of the CE-2w for me are the warm mid range focused sound that it has and the natural sounding sweep to the wave form of the modulation. On the standard CE-2 setting the range and depth control are fairly limited, the rate won’t go very fast and the depth doesn't go very deep. In standard mode it’s all about warm, smooth and mellow chorus sounds. The CE-1 setting has a much deeper more throbbing modulation sound but is still limited as to how fast it can go with the rate control. The third mode; the vibrato mode solves that by keeping the deep modulation sound of the CE-1 mode but it can go much faster.
The CE-2w is really versatile but I’d recommend it most for people who want a natural sounding, smooth, mid range focused analogue chorus sound.
The DC-2w is a reissue of the original DC-2 which is a compact version of the Roland SDD-320 rack unit. The DC-2 is all about bright shimmer with lots of presence. It doesn’t get very fast or intense even on setting 4 so no fast wobbly vibrato settings here, but it does have it’s own character and a very good stereo mode. You can also combine any two of the buttons for a multi voiced chorus effect but because each individual mode is quite subtle it doesn’t change the sound that much. The SDD-320 mode increases the presence, which brings out the bright shimmery quality of the pedal even more.
The CH-1 has got a slightly darker more neutral sounding EQ character compared to the other pedals. The wave form of the modulation seems steeper too. The controls are easy to understand and they have a good amount of range. A very versatile and easy to use chorus pedal.
The CE-5 I think gives the most modern sound. There are high and low filters that cut the treble and bass as you turn them to the left. The CE-5 is great at doing more extreme settings. There is loads of range in the controls and the waveform seems very deep and sharp.

Chorus is one of history’s most beloved guitar effects, but what does a chorus pedal actually do? Join Sweetwater‘s Don Carr for a history of this classic effect and a no-nonsense look at what makes chorus pedals tick! As their name suggests, chorus pedals make sounds bigger by copying and doubling the input — just like a chorus of voices might join in to give a performer deeper sonic texture and a grander sound overall.

Let your tone shimmer and shine with the Boss CH-1 Super Chorus.
4 simple knobs let you dial in depth, rate, EQ, and level for precise tonal shaping and that classic Boss chorus tone. Sailing highs and, rich, warm lows, are characteristic of the Boss CH-1. With great tone and stereo outs that allow for dual amp hookup and a unique stereo effect, the CH-1 is a shining example of a great chorus pedal at musician-friendly prices.

MXR STEREO CHORUS

- Musically voiced Rate and Width controls.
- Bass and Treble controls for EQing the chorus voice.
- Stereo outputs for huge tonal spread.
This gorgeous sounding pedal will remind you how cool chorus can be.
Set the Rate and Width controls to your liking and then dial in as much effect as you want with the Intensity knob. You can then shape the tone even further by EQ-ing the modulated frequencies with the Bass and Treble controls.
Run in mono or use the stereo outputs for a huge, vibrant sound. If you're looking to preserve the low end of your guitar tone, the Stereo Chorus has got you covered with its Bass Filter button that applies the effect to the high frequencies only.
