The 92.5-mile-long (148.9km) river crosses Jackson, Calhoun and Gulf counties.
The river flows into the Dead Lakes State Recreation Area just before reaching the Apalachicola. The Dead Lakes were formed when the Apalachicola deposited sand bars blocking the mouth of the Chipola.
The Chipola River now flows for several miles south from the Dead Lakes parallel to the Apalachicola River before its confluence finally joining it.

Chipola River Paddling Trail | The Ovens and Maund Spring
We kayak down the Chipola River with Doug Alderson, nature author and Assistant Chief of the Florida Office of Greenways and Trails. We selected a section of the Chipola River Paddling Trail with a few good highlights. The first is the Ovens, which is likely the only dry cave directly accessible from a Florida River. After that, we visit one of 63 springs that feed the river, the most of any in northwest Florida.

Hydrilla in the Chipola
Hydrilla has spread to Florida's Chipola River from the infestation that is covering Merritt's Mill pond near Marianna. Officials in Jackson County report that they have found the invasive plant growing along an approximately 10-mile stretch of the Outstanding Florida Water, prompting fears that it could be spreading down river into Calhoun County as well.
The Chipola is a major Florida water resource and Blueway that is a popular paddling trail much loved by those who enjoy using canoes and kayaks, as well as other outdoor enthusiasts who like to fish, boat, or just enjoy a day in the Florida sun.
