Things Fall Apart : Novel by Chinua Achebe in Hindi | summary | African Literature
Things Fall Apart is the debut novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe, first published in 1958. It depicts pre-colonial life in the southeastern part of Nigeria and the arrival of Europeans during the late 19th century. It is seen as the archetypal modern African novel in English, and one of the first to receive global critical acclaim. It is a staple book in schools throughout Africa and is widely read and studied in English-speaking countries around the world. The novel was first published in the UK in 1962 by William Heinemann Ltd, and became the first work published in Heinemann's African Writers Series.

Chinua Achebe was a Nigerian novelist, poet, professor, and critic. His first novel Things Fall Apart (1958), often considered his best, is the most widely read book in modern African literature. He won the Man Booker International Prize in 2007.
Chinua Achebe was the studious son of an evangelical priest. A student of English literature, he started writing in the 1950s, choosing English as his medium but weaving the storytelling tradition of the Igbo people into his books.
His characters were insiders — everyday people such as the village chief (in Things Fall Apart), the priest (in Arrow of God), or the school teacher (in A Man of the People). Through their stories, we witness a Nigeria at the crossroads of civilization, culture, and generations.
His pen brought to life the land and traditions of the Igbo: the hum of everyday village life; the anticipation and excitement of sacred masquerades; the stories of the elders and the honor of warriors; the joy of family and the grief of loss.
Considered by many to be the father of modern African literature, Achebe was awarded the Man Booker Prize in 2007.

The Search Engine Google is showing this Doodle in Nigeria and U.S for the Chinua Achebe’s 87th Birthday.

The novel follows the life of Okonkwo, an Igbo ("Ibo" in the novel) man and local wrestling champion in the fictional Nigerian clan of Umuofia. The work is split into three parts, with the first describing his family, personal history, and the customs and society of the Igbo, and the second and third sections introducing the influence of European colonialism and Christian missionaries on Okonkwo, his family, and the wider Igbo community.
Things Fall Apart was followed by a sequel, No Longer at Ease (1960), originally written as the second part of a larger work along with Arrow of God (1964). Achebe states that his two later novels A Man of the People (1966) and Anthills of the Savannah (1987), while not featuring Okonkwo's descendants, are spiritual successors to the previous novels in chronicling African history.

The Pursuit of God | A.W. Tozer | Free Christian Audiobook
~ Audiobook Description ~
To have found God and still to pursue Him is a paradox of love, scorned indeed by the too-easily-satisfied religious person, but justified in happy experience by the children of the burning heart. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux stated this holy paradox in a musical four-line poem that will be instantly understood by every worshipping soul:
We taste Thee, O Thou Living Bread,
And long to feast upon Thee still:
We drink of Thee, the Fountainhead
And thirst our souls from Thee to fill.
Come near to the holy men and women of the past and you will soon feel the heat of their desire after God. Let A. W. Tozer’s pursuit of God spur you also into a genuine hunger and thirst to truly know God.

Told through the fictional experiences of Okonkwo, a wealthy and fearless Igbo warrior of Umuofia in the late 1800s, Things Fall Apart explores one man's futile resistance to the devaluing of his Igbo traditions by British political andreligious forces and his despair as his community capitulates to the powerful new order.

Chinua Achebe's classic postcolonial novel Things Fall Apart details the tragedy of colonialism through the eyes of Okonkwo, a respected member of Igbo society in 1890s Nigeria.
Determined and stoic, he meets the harsh realities of life with equanimity. He survives a hardscrabble upbringing to become the patriarch of a growing family and a prominent figure in his village. However, the arrival of British colonists upsets the delicate balance he has established.
The disruption created by these invaders, who set about converting the Igbo to Christianity, sets Okonkwo on the path to ruin. As he attempts to rebel against the new order established by the British, he loses everything he has worked for.
This parable of colonialist oppression avoids easy conclusions. It instead focuses on the very personal struggle of one man as he attempts to cope with powerful social forces intent on destroying his way of life.
Considered the father of modern African literature, Nigerian-born Chinua Achebe first published Things Fall Apart in 1958. The novel has been translated into more than 50 languages. Nelson Mandela said Achebe “brought Africa to the rest of the world.”
This historical fiction novel contains many powerful themes, such as betrayal, fate vs. free will, and culture and change. Other symbols include fire representing Okonkwo and his blazing anger, which eventually destroys him; yams symbolizing masculinity, wealth, and respect; and locusts symbolizing the arrival of British colonists.

“A true classic of world literature . . . A masterpiece that has inspired generations of writers in Nigeria, across Africa, and around the world.”
Things Fall Apart is the first of three novels in Chinua Achebe's critically acclaimed African Trilogy. It is a classic narrative about Africa's cataclysmic encounter with Europe as it establishes a colonial presence on the continent.

What is Postcolonialism:
Since I claim to be a postcolonialism scholar, I think it is apt to include a brief description of my field of study. In my view, Postcolonialism ( also written as Post Colonialism or Post-Colonialism) is a dynamic field of literary study that focuses on the history of colonialism and native responses to the colonial policies and life after colonialism formally ends. The field of postcolonialism also offers insights into the literature and culture of the the former European colonies and their struggles after the end of colonialism.

Reading (No Longer at Ease) by Chinua Achebe in Hindi
No Longer at Ease
No Longer at Ease is a 1960 novel by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe. It is the story of an Igbo man, Obi Okonkwo, who leaves his village for an education in Britain and then a job in the Nigerian colonial civil service, but is conflicted between his African culture and Western lifestyle and ends up taking a bribe. The novel is the second work in what is sometimes referred to as the "African trilogy", following Things Fall Apart and preceding Arrow of God. Things Fall Apart concerns the struggle of Obi Okonkwo's grandfather Okonkwo against the changes brought by the English.
The book's title comes from the closing lines of T. S. Eliot's poem, The Journey of the Magi.

In this episode, Zeinab Badawi provides an overview of how Africans lived before the arrival of Europeans. We see traditional religion in practice in Kenya, we meet a traditional medicine practitioner in Congo, and in Uganda, we witness traditional justice in action as community elders adjudicate in a matrimonial dispute.
We hear from one local king who reminisces about how compassionate and ordered life was under the old ways and a local chief and his family in Zambia provide insights of traditional village life before the disruptive influence of Europeans.
The title describes a people who were becoming 'no longer at ease’ in the run up to one of the ugliest chapters in human history: the trans Atlantic slave trade. The late acclaimed Nigerian author Chinua Achebe wrote a book with the same title.

CHINUA ACHEBE’s Arrow of God: The Malaise of Colonial Modernity
This episode will be focusing on Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God and what it tells us of the malaise of colonial modernity. Unlike Things Fall Apart, Arrow of God is set among the Igbo of Eastern Nigeria set in the early twentieth century when the colonial bureaucracy has been fully established and is not simply incipient, as in the earlier novel. We are introduced to Ezeulu, the Chief Priest of Ulu among the people of Umuaro. But unlike what we saw in Things Fall Apart, the traditional culture here is full of disagreements and quarrels about everything, even the foundational narratives of the clan. In the midst of this is placed Ezeulu, who as a Chief Priest is also afflicted by doubts about his sphere of social action in the context of the historical changes that his clan is exposed to. I w...

This episode will be focusing on Chinua Achebe’s Arrow of God and what it tells us of the malaise of colonial modernity. In the midst of this is placed Ezeulu, who as a Chief Priest is also afflicted by doubts about his sphere of social action in the context of the historical changes that his clan is exposed to. I will be arguing that Ezeulu’s crisis is part of the malaise that comes with colonial modernity. For colonial modernity is not simply the historical phase of new infrastructure, colonial bureaucracy, and alternative modes of self-fashioning brought on by Christianity, but that it also ambiguates traditional attitudes regarding their collective pasts. It is this ambiguation that leads to a sense of confusion and malaise, and that in the novel is depicted vividly through the mind of Ezeulu.

Welcome to my Channel History of English Literature!

Welcome to my Channel History of English Literature!

An Evening with Chinua Achebe
Through his fiction and non-fiction works, Nigerian author Chinua Achebe has sought to repair the damage done to the continent of Africa and its people as a result of European colonization. This is best exemplified in his most famous novel "Things Fall Apart," one of the first African novels written in English to achieve national acclaim. Set in the 1890s, the novel deals with the impact of British colonialism on the traditional Igbo society in Nigeria. Published in 1958 -- just two years before the end of a century of British rule in Nigeria -- the novel celebrated its 50th anniversary of publication in 2008. "An Evening with Chinua Achebe" featured the author reading from his celebrated work.

Biafran war. I escaped and my brother was killed. Nigeria novelist Prof Chinua Achebe
The Nigerian Civil War (also known as the Biafra War and the Nigerian-Biafran War) was a civil war in Nigeria that was fought between the Nigerian government and the state of Biafra secession from July 6, 1967 to 15 January 1970.
Biafra represented the nationalist aspirations of the Igbo people, whose leaders believed that they could no longer coexist with the federal government dominated by the North. The conflict was the result of political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions that preceded the official decolonization of Nigeria by Britain from 1960 to 1963.
The immediate causes of the war in 1966 included ethno-religious unrest in northern Nigeria, a military coup, a counter-coup and th...

The conflict was the result of political, economic, ethnic, cultural and religious tensions that preceded the official decolonization of Nigeria by Britain from 1960 to 1963.
The immediate causes of the war in 1966 included ethno-religious unrest in northern Nigeria, a military coup, a counter-coup and the persecution of Igbo living in northern Nigeria. Controlling lucrative oil production in the Niger Delta has played an important strategic role.
In one-year, federal government troops surrounded Biafra and conquered oil on the coast and the town of Port Harcourt. The blockade that was imposed during the next impasse led to mass starvation. During the two and a half years of the war, there were a total of around 100,000 military victims, while between 500,000 and 2 million Biafran civilians died of starvation.
In the middle of 1968, images of malnourished and hungry children from Biafra saturated the mass media in Western countries. The plight of hungry Biafrans abroad has become famous, which has significantly increased funding and awareness of international non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The United Kingdom and the Soviet Union were the main supporters of the Nigerian government.
