Why American Automakers Are Failing In China
Detroit automakers like General Motors made a fortune selling cars to Chinese consumers after the Asian country opened its auto market to foreign firms in the 1980s. But the good times are over as Chinese firms have caught up with the foreign firms who once taught them the automotive trade. Top names like BYD, Geely and Great Wall are now making globally competitive products and many companies with tech backgrounds are entering the industry, too, including Li Auto, XPeng, Nio, Xiaomi, Huawei, Baidu, Tencent and Alibaba. Jeep’s joint venture already went bankrupt, and one industry analyst said he expects Ford and GM to withdraw from the country in the next five years along with other such as Hyundai, Kia and Nissan.

Currently, the YangWang brand features three powerful luxury cars, and we'll discuss two of these cars that defy conventional expectations in the automotive world.

A common trend among automakers is to expand from the main parent brand and form separate luxury car brands. For instance, Toyota created Lexus, Bentley is owned by Volkswagen, and Volkswagen also owns Lamborghini and Bugatti. Similarly, Infiniti is a luxury brand of Nissan, Land Rover and Jaguar are owned by the Indian automaker Tata Motors, BMW owns Rolls-Royce, and the leading Chinese automaker BYD has recently introduced its luxury brand "YangWang," which translates to "Admire" or "Looking Up." Currently, the YangWang brand features three powerful luxury cars, and we'll discuss two of these cars that defy conventional expectations in the automotive world.
The YangWang U8 is the first vehicle produced by the brand, designed not only for luxury but also for impressive performance, including off-road capabilities and what could be described as "supernatural abilities." These include the ability to sail across water, move sideways, and execute a "tank turn," which allows the vehicle to rotate 360 degrees in place. This tank turn feature is particularly useful in tight spaces, though it should not be used frequently to avoid excessive tire wear. The U8 can perform a tank turn thanks to its four powerful motors, one on each wheel, which generate enough power to overcome tire friction and allow the wheels to move freely.
In addition to its tank turn capability, the YangWang U8 can also drive on water. If you find yourself in a flood while in the U8, the vehicle can wade through water up to 1,400 mm deep. When the floating mode is activated, sensors monitor the environment and water depth. As the car enters the water, all windows automatically close, the suspension raises to its highest level, the sunroof opens for emergency exits, the air conditioning switches to internal circulation, and the internal combustion engine shuts down if the water depth is detected. The U8 is IP68 waterproof and can float for up to 30 minutes at a speed of 3 kilometers per hour. Even in these conditions, it can still perform a tank turn on water. BYD advises that this feature should only be used in emergencies like floods and not for crossing rivers. After navigating deep water, the YangWang U8 should be inspected at a service center. The YangWang U8 is also capable of impressive off-road performance.

Chinese automakers continue to introduce new cars with impressive features at a rapid pace. Among the most recognized names globally is Huawei, known primarily for its smartphones, home appliances, and other consumer electronics. As a global leader in information and communications technology infrastructure and smart devices, Huawei has now expanded into the automotive industry, aiming to disrupt the established order. When a new player overtakes the industry's leaders, the rules of the game often change. With Huawei's entry into the market, the automotive industry is on the brink of transformation, thanks to the introduction of their latest luxury vehicles: the *Stelato S9* luxury sedan and the Aito M9, a full-size luxury SUV that is making waves across the industry.
Luxury brands such as Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Rolls-Royce, Porsche, Land Rover, Bentley, and Cadillac are renowned for their quality and reliability. However, Huawei's foray into the automotive sector, particularly with its two new luxury models, challenges the status quo. These vehicles feature advanced autonomous driving capabilities, cutting-edge technology, and impressive performance that will leave even the most discerning buyers speechless.
Starting with the Huawei Aito M9, this luxury electric SUV is positioned to compete with the likes of the Rolls-Royce Cullinan, Land Rover Range Rover, Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV, BMW iX, and Porsche Cayenne. Although the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV boasts slightly more horsepower, the Huawei M9 accelerates faster, reaching 62 miles per hour in just 4.9 seconds, compared to the EQS SUV’s 6 seconds. But that’s only the beginning. Once you step inside the Huawei Aito M9, the interior's luxurious design and comfort for both driver and passengers are striking. In just six months after its market debut, the Aito M9 received over 100,000 orders. Despite the relatively recent joint venture between Huawei and Seres Group to create the Aito luxury brand, many buyers are showing increased interest in these vehicles. Is it the design, the technology, or the powerful performance under the hood that captivates consumers? Let’s explore why the Aito M9, along with Huawei’s other luxury car, the Stelato S9 sedan, are generating such excitement and whether they have what it takes to compete in the luxury car market.

The Biden administration set a climate goal that 50 percent of all new car sales in the US would be electric by 2030. Meanwhile, China reached that milestone this year, in 2024. This video explains how China was able to fast-track EV adoption and develop an EV battery that rivals what any other country has been able to do so far. It’s been a decade of government strategies that have created some of the biggest battery companies in the world, like CATL and BYD.
The Biden administration wants to keep Chinese cars and batteries out of the country — but our video explains what kind of position that puts the US in in terms of meeting its own climate goals.
