Chinese opera (Chinese:戲曲; pinyin:xìqǔ) is a popular form of drama and musical theatre in China with roots going back to the early periods in China. It is a composite performance art that is an amalgamation of various art forms that existed in ancient China, and evolved gradually over more than a thousand years, reaching its mature form in the 13th century during the Song Dynasty. Early forms of Chinese drama are simple, but over time they incorporated various art forms, such as music, song and dance, martial arts, acrobatics, as well as literary art forms to become Chinese opera.
There are numerous regional branches of Chinese opera, of which the Beijing opera ( 京劇 ) is one of the most notable.
History
Six Dynasties to Tang
An early form of Chinese drama is the Canjun Opera (參軍戲, or Adjutant Play) which originated from the Later Zhao Dynasty (319-351). In its early form it was a simple comic drama involving only two performers, where a corrupt officer, Canjun or the adjutant, was ridiculed by a jester named Grey Hawk (蒼鶻). The characters in Canjun Opera are thought to be the forerunners of the fixed role categories of later Chinese opera, particularly of its comic chou (丑) characters.
Opera is a monthly Britishmagazine devoted to covering all things related to opera. It contains reviews and articles about current opera productions internationally, as well as articles on opera recordings, opera singers, opera companies, opera directors, and opera books. The magazine also contains major features and analysis on individual operas and people associated with opera.
Opera is printed in A5 size, with colour photos, and consists of around 130 pages. Page numbering is consecutive for a complete year (e.g. September 2009 goes from p1033-1168). All issues since August 2006 are available online to current subscribers (through Exact Editions).

A Taste of Chuanju (Sichuan Opera)
This short video offers a taste of chuanju (Sichuan opera).
Chuanju is a sub-genre of xiqu, which refers to traditional Chinese song-and-dance-lead theatre. Chuanju is particularly popular in Sichuan province, as well as parts of Yunnan and Guizhou.
When tracing the history of opera in China, it is generally agreed upon that were 5 distinct styles, each with differing musical systems. These styles were kunqiang, gaoqiang, huqin, tanxi and dengxi. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, practitioners of what is now chuanju began to bring these 5 traditional styles together, giving birth to a style of its own, within which lies the history of opera in China.
Today, chuanju shows are typically composed using one of the 5 classical music systems of Chinese opera whilst incorporating elemen...
