Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt, Hinmatóowyalahtq̓it in Americanist orthography, popularly known as Chief Joseph or Young Joseph (March 3, 1840 – September 21, 1904), succeeded his father Tuekakas (Chief Joseph the Elder) as the leader of the Wal-lam-wat-kain (Wallowa) band of Nez Perce, a Native American tribe indigenous to the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon, in the interior Pacific Northwest region of the United States.
He led his band during the most tumultuous period in their contemporary history when they were forcibly removed from their ancestral lands in the Wallowa Valley by the United States federal government and forced to move northeast, onto the significantly reduced reservation in Lapwai, Idaho Territory. A series of events that culminated in episodes of violence led those Nez Perce who resisted removal, including Joseph's band and an allied band of the Palouse tribe, to take flight to attempt to reach political asylum, ultimately with the Lakota led by Sitting Bull, who had sought refuge in Canada.
The Nez Perce War was an armed conflict between several bands of the Nez Perce tribe of Native Americans and their allies, a small band of the Palouse tribe led by Red Echo (Hahtalekin) and Bald Head (Husishusis Kute), against the United States Army. The conflict, fought between June–October 1877, stemmed from the refusal of several bands of the Nez Perce, dubbed "non-treaty Indians", to give up their ancestral lands in the Pacific Northwest and move to an Indian reservation in Idaho. This forced removal was in violation of the 1855 Treaty of Walla Walla, which granted the tribe 7.5 million acres in their ancestral lands and the right to hunt and fish in lands ceded to the government.
After the first armed engagements in June, the Nez Perce embarked on an arduous trek north initially to seek help with the Crow tribe. After the Crows' refusal of aid, they sought sanctuary with the Lakota led by Sitting Bull, who had fled to Canada in May 1877 to avoid capture following the 1876 Battle of the Little Bighorn.

How Did an Ancient Sumerian Tablet End Up in the Hands of a Native American Chief?
When Chief Joseph, a renowned Nez Perce leader, surrendered to Europeans in 1877, he gave a special gift to General Nelson Appleton Miles. The gift received by the general was a pendant that turned out to be an ancient Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet. How did Chief Joseph come to have this and more importantly, what was it that was written on the cuneiform?

Chief Joseph surrenders
Chief Joseph made a promise to his dying father to never give up his peoples land where he would be buried. Joseph never signed a treaty giving this land to the US Government but they took it anyway. In an attempt to keep his people free he made a desperate run to Canada to join up with Sitting Bull. He came up 40 miles short. I wish he had made it.

In the summer of 1877 Chief Joseph and the peaceful Nez Perce went to war with the U.S. Government in a running fight that spanned four states and 1,170 miles. Who was Chief Joseph? Why’d Buffalo Bill call him “the greatest Indian ever produced?” And why did the Nez Perce go to war? I’ve been looking forward to this episode for a long time so without further ado, let’s dive into Chief Joseph and the Nez Perce War! #nativeamerican #wildwest #history

The Life and Sad Ending of Chief Joseph Biography
When the United States attempted to force the Nez Perce to move to a reservation in 1877, Chief Joseph reluctantly agreed. Following the killing of a group of white settlers, tensions erupted again, and Chief Joseph tried to lead his people to Canada, in what is considered one of the great retreats in military history.

Nez Perce War: Explained
The Nez Perce War was a conflict between the United States and the Nez Perce Indian Nation in 1877. The Nez Perce were forced out of their ancestral homeland because gold had been found in it. Those who refused to sign the new treaty were eventually forced off of their land, hunted down, and either killed or exiled to eastern Indian reservations.

LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST | Nez Percé War Ep1 — “50 Years of Peace”
LEGENDS OF THE OLD WEST presented by Black Barrel Media. For about 50 years, there was relative peace in the U.S. and the Nez Percé. There were outbreaks of violence, like the Whitman Massacre, but not the continual warfare that existed between the U.S. army and other tribes. Tensions rose dramatically in the 1850s and 1860s when the U.S. proposed treaties that were designed to take nearly all Nez Percé land. By 1863, five bands of the Nez Percé were rebelling against the treaties and set the stage for the Nez Percé War.

The Nez Perce War was an armed conflict that pitted several bands of the Nez Perce tribe of Native Americans and their allies, a small band of the Palouse tribe led by Red Echo and Bald Head, against the United States Army. The conflict, fought between June and October 1877, stemmed from the refusal of several bands of the Nez Perce, dubbed "non-treaty Indians," to give up their ancestral lands in the Pacific Northwest and move to an Indian reservation in Idaho. This forced removal was in violation of the 1855 Treaty of Walla Walla, which granted the tribe 7.5 million acres in their ancestral lands and the right to hunt and fish in lands ceded to the government.

Leah and I are two humans who no longer support the inhuman, oligarchic empire model destroying our planet and our true nature as human beings. As activists we decided to do something about it, so we opted out of our former lives to begin anew. We are currently transforming pristine alpine wilderness into a self-sustaining homestead and organic farm in preparation for the upcoming collapse. We plan on developing and executing every single step of the process in open source format for the benefit of all humanity. With our backgrounds in academia and the sciences (climatology, geology, physics, biology, chemistry, and more) we hope to uncover the lies perpetrated by the mass media. It will be presented here and on our website in a systematic and thorough process. As you can imagine, this is a multifaceted, lifelong project, and we are so passionately excited to take the next steps towards self sufficiency and our dream!
When the United States attempted to force the Nez Perce to move to a reservation in 1877, Chief Joseph reluctantly agreed. Following the killing of a group of white settlers, tensions erupted again, and Chief Joseph tried to lead his people to Canada, in what is considered one of the great retreats in military history.
Q'Orianka Kilcher reads Chief Joseph's account of his 1879 trip to Washington, DC. Part of a reading of Voices of a People's History of the United States (Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove) at All Saints Church in Pasadena, CA on February 1, 2007.

Facing removal onto a reservation in 1877, around 800 Nimíipuu (Nez Perce) people fight and flee west into the mountains. Led by Chief Joseph, Looking Glass, White Bird and Toohoolhoolzote, the bands fight US troops and trek for months across the changing American landscape–from Idaho through Yellowstone and toward Canada– in one of the great tragic sagas of our time. "An unpardonable crime" in the title is a quote from the NYT excerpt shared around 14:30 in the video.

And so our sun may set, we've been in winter for so long Don't give up on me yet, I will give you what you deserve Though our arguments are many, and your eyes are always sore I promise you we'll get there, this war is almost won This war is almost won And lose if you have to Oh lose if you have to Cause I've been putting you through this hell for so long As long this stands your choice my dear, don't lose or we have won Don't let your heart grow cold, when you go to sleep upset Grow with me till we're old, we will find a way to heal The bruises that will appear, from choices long ago Hold on to our love my dear, don't think it's dead and done When this war is almost won And lose if you have to Oh lose if you have to Cause I've been putting you this hell for so long As long this stands your choice my dear, don't lose or we have won I'm running round in circles drinking whiskey and your wine To drown the sound of endless questions in your mind Forget the way I treated you and trust that I will love you better Give me all your patience, give me time x 3
