The canal was built to export coal, limestone, and lead from Derbyshire, iron from Chesterfield, and corn, deals, timber, groceries, etc. into Derbyshire. The stone for the Palace of Westminster was quarried in North Anston, Rotherham, and transported via the canal.
Construction
The route of the canal was surveyed by James Brindley and John Varley, who estimated the cost at £94,908 17s. Brindley presented his proposals to a meeting in Worksop on 24 August 1769. Bawtry interests asked John Grundy to carry out a second survey. He proposed a rather shorter course, from Stockwith in a straight line to Bawtry and then by Scrooby, Blyth and Carlton, to join Brindley's line at Shireoaks. Grundy's line was 51⁄2 miles (8.9km) shorter, and the cost estimated at £71,479, 6s. 9½d. Although Grundy's line was considerably cheaper, it achieved this by missing Worksop and Retford, and the investors had already decided in favour of Brindley's route.
An application was made to Parliament and the Act of Parliament received the Royal Assent on 28 March 1771, entitled An Act for making a navigable Cut or Canal from Chesterfield, in the county of Derby, through or near Worksop and Retford, to join the River Trent, at or near Stockwith, in the county of Nottingham.
Chesterfield is a market town and a borough of Derbyshire, United Kingdom. It lies 24 miles (39km) north of Derby, on a confluence of the rivers Rother and Hipper. It has a population of 103,800 (2011), making it the largest town within the administrative borders of Derbyshire, and the second largest settlement in the traditional county after the unitary authority of the city of Derby.
Archaeology of the town traces its beginnings to the 1st century and the construction of a Romanfort, which became redundant and was abandoned once peace was achieved. Later an Anglian village grew up on the site; the name Chesterfield stems from the Anglo-Saxon words 'caester' (a Roman fort) and 'feld' (grazing land).
Chesterfield received its market charter in 1204 and has a moderate sized market on three days a week. The town sits on a large coalfield which formed a major part of the area's economy until the 1980s. Little evidence of the mining industry remains today.
The town's best known landmark is the Church of St Mary and All Saints, popularly known as the "Crooked Spire", which was originally constructed in the 14th-century.
The current boundaries include the town of Chesterfield, together with areas to the north towards Dronfield and to the east towards Bolsover, comprising the Borough of Chesterfield wards: Brimington North, Brimington South, Brockwell, Dunston, Hasland, Hollingwood and Inkersall, Holmebrook, Linacre, Loundsley Green, Middlecroft and Poolsbrook, Moor, Old Whittington, Rother, St Helen’s, St Leonard’s, Walton, and West. The other two Borough of Chesterfield wards (Barrow Hill and New Whittington; Lowgates and Woodthorpe) fall within the neighbouring North East Derbyshire seat. Boundary changes before the 2010 general election, when the Mid Derbyshire constituency was created, meant that Chesterfield lost New Whittington to North East Derbyshire but otherwise retained its shape.
The town of Chesterfield lies just outside the Peak District southwest of Sheffield. It is noted for the Church of St Mary and All Saints with its famous 'crooked spire' The constituency borders the constituencies of Bolsover and Derbyshire North East.

Just the south of the station was the Chesterfield Tunnel. A 410 yard long tunnel that cut under the east of the town centre. The tunnel still exists under the town, sealed off at one end, but the south portal can still be partially seen.

After leaving the disused railway tunnel, the route is once again consumed by the A61 dual carriageway and the Horns Bridge Island roundabout. Horns Bridge was once a point where the 3 railway companies crossed on three levels. Today only the Midland remains and the viaduct and bridges have been knocked down. - almost all, that is.

CHESTERFIELD | The most underrated town in the UK?
Gimbal Walk TV visits Chesterfield, Derbyshire - a town with a crooked spire close to Sheffield and Derby, to see if this really is the most underrated UK town.
Chesterfield is a town we have visited before and we have decided to travel back to this market town close to Sheffield and see what's here and what the town has to offer.
Best known for the church with the crooked spire, Chesterfield is a town that I think has so much more to offer whether that's the magnificent town hall, the old historic buildings scattered throughout the town, the winding wheel theatre, the shops, the pubs, the market and market hall and more.
The thing I find with Chesterfield is that if you mention it to locals, many of them will have a bit of a moan about the town centre, and people from outside the town will tell me that they don't really know that much about the place. Chesterfield is perhaps best known for the crooked spire of its Church of Saint Mary and All Saints and is why the local football team is known as The Spireites.
So let's have a walking tour around Chesterfield Town Centre and take a look at what's here, and what Chesterfield has within it's town centre.
Visit Chesterfield for a great day out or to stay. Brilliantly located in the centre of the UK with superb road, rail and air links, the town is famous for its 800 year-old open air market and the unique and unusual 'Crooked Spire' Church.
Whether it's a town or village experience, contemporary or traditional housing, buying or renting, living in Chesterfield and the surrounding area is affordable and offers something for everyone. With friendly and welcoming communities it's a safe place to live and bring up a family.
Chesterfield is in The Midlands and Sheffield is in the North. If you travel from Chesterfield to Sheffield on the dual carriageway there is a brow on the hill where the watershed divides either north or south.
Chesterfield in Derbyshire is a town of great character with a history of significance way beyond our immediate area.
Chesterfield has a fabulous offer for businesses, residents and visitors alike. Chesterfield is far more than a historic market town in Derbyshire with an iconic Crooked Spire.
Chesterfield is a market town and unparished area in the Borough of Chesterfield, Derbyshire, England, 24 miles north of Derby and 11 miles south of Sheffield at the confluence of the River Rother and River Hipper.
