King Carlo Alberto of Sardinia
Carlo Alberto was the King of Piedmont-Sardinia from 1831 to 1849. He is most remembered for authorizing the constitution that served his kingdom and later the Kingdom of Italy for the next hundred years as well as waging war to drive the Austrians out of northern Italy. Despite his tenacity however he was defeated by the Austrians and was finally forced to abdicate and go into exile in Portugal. He died in 1849 at the age of 50 and was returned to Turin for burial.

After the defeat in the First War of Independence, Carlo Alberto abdicated in favor of his son Vittorio Emanuele II and went into exile in Portugal, in Oporto, on April 19, 1849. Here he said his famous phrase:
"In spite of my abdication, if a new war against Austria ever arises ... I will rush spontaneously, even as a simple soldier, into the ranks of her enemies ... I am also relieved by the thought and the hope that one day what I I tried. The nation may have had better principles than I, but no one who loved it so much. To make her free, independent and great ... I made all the sacrifices with a happy heart ... I sought death in battle and did not find it ... "
During those days Carlo Alberto suffered from progressive wasting, cough, abscesses. Two heart attacks struck him, but the doctors considered the situation of the liver more serious, for which the former sovereign insisted on eating very little and fasting on Fridays. He read the letters and newspapers that arrived from Italy. He forbade both his mother and his wife and children to visit him. In June his health deteriorated irremediably. He fell asleep with the crucifix on his chest. He died at 3.30 pm on July 28, 1849, at just under 51 years of age.
The funeral, with great participation of the people, took place on the 13th in the Cathedral of Turin. The day after the body was solemnly buried in the basement of the Basilica of Superga where he still rests.
