Toponymic evidence suggests that Charlbury was an Anglo-Saxon settlement from an early date, and may be associated with 'Faerpinga in Middelenglum' listed in the Tribal Hidage of the 7th to 9th centuries. The name is a compound of two Old English elements. Burh is a fortified place.Ceorl (probably pronounced /tʃɔrl/) is a "freeman of the lowest class", but other sources suggest it was also a personal name. For this reason some hold the latter two pronunciations more valid than the former, and the current spelling not phonetic, preferring "Chorlbury". The similarity between "Ceorl" and the personal name "Charles" is no accident: "Charles", "ceorl" and "churl", along with the modern German name "Karl" derive from the same Proto-Germanic word *karlaz.

A Walk Around Charlbury
A Walk Around Charlbury
Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England
End of May / Early June 2022
Here are some scenes from a visit to the small Cotswold town of Charlbury. It was the week of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, hence the flags, bunting and barn dances.
"Nestling in the Evenlode Valley, sequestered down winding B roads but with its own railway station, Charlbury is a vibrant yet picturesque Oxfordshire town. A centre for festivals, full of welcoming pubs, and ideal for walking and cycling, there's always something going on in Charlbury."

Charlbury has also been named by The Sundays Times as one of the 100 Best Places To Live:

In the 19th century, glove-making became a major source of employment, with the town becoming the largest glove manufacturing centre in West Oxfordshire at its peak. This industry continued here up until the 1960s.
In 1853 the railway arrived in Charlbury courtesy of the Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway. Today it forms part of the Cotswold Line which runs between Oxford and Hereford. Trains to Oxford typically take around 15 minutes.

Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 12 miles northwest of Oxford, is the town of Charlbury.
Geographically, Charlbury is situated in the Evenlode Valley, on the edge of the Cotswolds and the Wychwood forest. The 'bury' suffix indicates that it was once an Anglo-Saxon fortified settlement.
At the heart of the town is the Church of St Mary. This dates all the way back to the 12th century, with a 13th century tower and various additions up until the 16th century. The church is Grade I listed.
In 1256, during the reign of Henry III, a market charter was granted to Charlbury. The town would remain small throughout its history, whose main industry was agriculture for the most part.

Welcome to Charlbury. Expecting one of the best towns in England, let alone the Cotswolds, our bubbles were burst in this VERY ordinary dull town. Let us take you for a look around anyway. Come back tomorrow for a proper terrible town.

Taking a short wander through the town of Charlbury and out toward Cornbury Park Estate. Taking in St. Mary's parish church along the way. In the heart of the Cotswold's Charlbury is one of the few places that you can reach by train. It has some pubs and shops in the city centre but not, perhaps, as many as other towns of a similar size.
This 4K video is longer than my usual videos as I wanted to do the kind of longer walking video that I enjoy putting on as a kind of ambient background sometimes. This is approximately 25 minutes. If it seems too long or you prefer more edited videos of the district, please let me know in the comments.
