The name Charing first appears in 799 as Ciorrincg. The name probably comes from the Anglo-Saxon word cerring, which means a bend in the road, or it may be from Ceorra-ingas, which is Anglo-Saxon, meaning people of Ceorra. The village is sited on the Pilgrims' Way from London to Canterbury, and is one day's walk from Canterbury. There are a number of old manors located around the village, such as Newlands (now a horse stud) and Pett Place. The village had a market recorded in 1285, and a fair recorded in the fifteenth century.
Charing Cross is named after the Eleanor cross that stood on the site, in what was once the hamlet of Charing. The site of the cross has been occupied since 1675 by an equestrian statue of King Charles I. A loose Victorian replica of the medieval cross, the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, was erected a short distance to the east outside the railway station.
Until 1931, "Charing Cross" referred to the part Whitehall between Great Scotland Yard and Trafalgar Square. At least one property retains a "Charing Cross" postal address: Drummonds Bank, on the corner of Whitehall and The Mall, which is designated "49 Charing Cross" (not to be confused with Charing Cross Road).
The Una Mestiza ("A Mestiza"), sometimes referred to as La Mestiza ("The Mestiza"), is an 1887 painting by award-winning Filipino painter and hero Juan Luna. The masterpiece is also known as La mestiza en su tocador which translates into English as The Mestiza at Her Dressing Table or Mestiza Lady at Her Dresser.Una Mestiza is also alternately called Charing. Coincidentally, this alternate title is the nickname of Luna's sister-in-law Rosario Melgar. Luna donated Una Mestiza to the Biblioteca Museu Victor Balaguer (Victor Balaguer Library Museum) of Vilanova i la Geltrú in the province of Barcelona in Spain. The Una Mestiza painting won an award at the Exposicion General de las Filipinas (Philippine General Exposition).

Inside The Abandoned Part Of London's Charing Cross Underground Station
Business Insider was given a tour of the abandoned part of London's Charing Cross Underground station. The station - which provides the Northen and Bakerloo line - once served the Jubilee line, but the platform was closed in 1999 after an extension was built that completely bypassed the station.
The platforms are now used for various forms of training by different organisations - including the fire brigade and the police - and public tours from the museum. Hollywood movies are also filmed in the station, providing scenes for the Bourne Ultimatum and Skyfall.
We were also given access to the station's service tunnel and ventilation shaft.

A Walk Around London's Charing Cross Railway Station

In this video we discuss some general knowledge fun facts on London that are often hidden London / secret London facts, known only by very few people and Londoners:
- How "Charing" comes from an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "bend" since the hamlet or village of Charing was on the bend of the river Thames.
- How "Cross" comes from the famous Eleanor Cross, which is one of 12 Eleanor Crosses found on the Eastern coast of England, UK.
- A little history behind the Eleanor Crosses; including the story of the Medieval King of England, King Edward I, Eleanor of Castile and their fates, including the one outside Charing Cross station, at the front of the Charing Cross hotel.
- The story of the bronze Charles I equestrian statue and its interesting journey during the British Civil War when it could have been lost in the battle between the Royalists and the Anti-Royalists.
- How the spot of the statue is the spots from which all distances to London are measured on road signs throughout the United Kingdom.

Charing Cross railway station, also known as London Charing Cross, is a central London railway terminus in the City of Westminster, England. It is one of 18 stations managed by Network Rail and all regular trains serving it are operated by Southeastern. It is the fifth busiest rail terminal in London. The office and shopping complex above the station is formally known as Embankment Place.
The station takes its name from its location next to the central London road junction of Charing Cross. The front of the station faces the Strand, while at the other end is the northern end of Hungerford Bridge, which is crossed by all trains serving the station. Ticket barriers control access to all platforms, although the bridge entrance has no barriers it is only open to passengers during the morning peak hours. Therefore, there are regular ticket inspections carried out on the bridge.
Charing Cross is the London terminus of the South Eastern Main Line. All regular services are operated by Southeastern which provides the majority of commuter/regional services to South East London and Kent.
