This animated video is aimed at giving a logical explanation on the working of centrifugal pumps. The importance of priming, cavitation & NPSH and commonly used impeller types are also illustrated in this video. Centrifugal pumps are the most preferred home water pumps. Depending upon the fluid viscosity different impeller types such as open, semi-open and shrouded are used. Mechanical design aspects of centrifugal pump such as water sealing arrangement and bearing housing are also well explained here.

Centrifugal Pumps
*Clarification: Cavitation bubbles are NOT air bubbles, they are bubbles of vaporized process liquid (eg steam if the liquid is water). Entrained air (ie air bubbles which are already present in, or are injected into, the process stream) can actually be helpful in very small amounts (less than 1%), because they mitigate the effects of the more troublesome cavitation bubbles. But larger amounts of entrained air (or any kind of gas) can negatively affect pump performance and reliability in a number of ways, including inefficiency, vibration and air pockets which cause dry-running of the seals.*

Pumps are used to move liquids from one place to another by increasing the mechanical energy of the liquid. The energy can be used to raise the liquid to a higher elevation or to increase its velocity or pressure. In a centrifugal pump this is accomplished by rotating an impeller which creates centrifugal force that transfers energy to the liquid. This module focuses on pumping principles and operation guidelines for typical centrifugal pumps.

Do Pumps Create Pressure or Flow?
Explaining how pumps produce both pressure and flow with some fun water demonstrations.
The bundle deal with Curiosity Stream has ended, but you can still get a great discount on Nebula and support Practical Engineering here: https://go.nebula.tv/practical-engineering
There’s a popular and persistent saying that pumps only create flow in a fluid, and resistance to that flow is what creates the pressure in a pipe. This video goes into some details about how two kinds of pumps work: centrifugal pumps and positive displacement pumps.
Practical Engineering is a YouTube channel about infrastructure and the human-made world around us. Hosted, written, and produced by Grady Hillhouse. We have new videos posted regularly, so please subscribe for updates. If you enjoyed the video, hit that ‘like’...
