"Cattle and Cane" is a song by the Australian alternative rock band The Go-Betweens, released as the first single from their second album Before Hollywood. It was released as a single in the United Kingdom by Rough Trade Records in February 1983 and reached #4 on the UK Independent Chart. The single and album were both released in Australia on Stunn, a small label allied with EMI. The Stunn pressings were of poor quality and their distribution limited.
Vocalist and bass guitarist, Grant McLennan, wrote the lyrics for his mother as an autobiographical description of his return home to a Queensland farm when a boy. He used Nick Cave's acoustic guitar while staying at Cave's London apartment. Vocalist and guitarist, Robert Forster co-wrote the song. Drummer Lindy Morrison also supplied backing vocals. The single and album both failed to appear on the relevant Australian Kent Music Report Top50 charts. In May 2001 "Cattle and Cane" was selected by Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA) as one of the Top30 Australian songs of all time.

It's a song that means so much to us and after releasing a live version on our debut album 'Home', this is the first time we've released a studio recording of it.
It's a song of redemption. It's about all those mistakes we made that ruins something precious, but the idea that in the midst of those mistakes, there is a chance of redemption. As heard on 6 Music, Radio 2, Radio 1, Amazing Radio and Channel 4's Sunday Brunch, Cattle & Cane have been heavily championed by the BBC Introducing team and performed at T In The Park and BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park before they'd even released their debut single 'I Will Rise' - which has now had over a million streams online. With numerous sold out regional dates already under their belts, Skies looks set to show the rest of the country what those in the band’s native North East already know.
Their debut album 'Home' is released on Friday 18th September 2015 via Quiet Crown Recordings and showcases the band’s abilities to meld soaring choruses and delicate melodies, to everyman lyrics that swerve cliché to create a sense of community and shared experience.
It may have been five years in the making, but the evidence of ‘Home’ suggests every single day was worth it. Not just for us as listeners but also for the band, with Cattle & Cane’s ubiquity in the North East set to spread across the UK.
Consisting of siblings Joe, Helen, Fran and Vin Hammill, with Tom Chapman on percussion, Cattle & Cane are capable of shifting even the hardest of hearts with their perfect, soaring harmonies.

I recall a schoolboy coming home Through fields of cane To a house of tin and timber And in the sky A rain of falling cinders From time to time The waste memory-wastes I recall a boy in bigger pants Like everyone Just waiting for a chance His father's watch He left it in the showers From time to time The waste memory-wastes I recall a bigger brighter world A world of books And silent times in thought And then the railroad The railroad takes him home Through fields of cattle Through fields of cane From time to time The waste memory-wastes The waste memory-wastes
