Catholic Social Services is a Roman Catholic social service organisation in Karachi, Pakistan.
History
In 1962 the Archbishop of Karachi (later Cardinal) Joseph Cordeiro decided to form the Catholic Social Services (CSS), becoming its first Chairman and chose Cyril Mendes to be the Honorary Secretary. All Catholic groups doing Social work like the Marie Adelaide Centre, Lemmens Welfare Society, came under the umbrella of CSS and thus got a forum to share their experiences and resources. Later Cyril Mendes was elected the Chairman of CSS and continued to be Chairman from 1969 to 1979.
CSS was registered with the Directorate Social Welfare, Government of Sindh as a voluntary social welfare organization in 1963.
Post 1971 war work
Since 1971 CSS has been engaged in rehabilitation of Bihari refugees from Bangladesh in Bhutta Village. CSS also provided housing loan, technical training and schools to the refugees settled at Majid Colony, Landhi, Karachi.
CSS successfully solicited donations from and worked with organizations such as Caritas Germany to send aid to Pakistan and was involved in many projects from opening medical clinics for vaccinations for the poor in Lalukhet, Nazimabad and rebuilding of homes damaged by the Indian Air force bombing in Keamari after the war.
Social services are a range of public services provided by governmental or private organizations. These public services aim to create more effective organizations, build stronger communities, and promote equity and opportunity.
Social services include the benefits and facilities such as education, food subsidies, health care, job training and subsidized housing, adoption, community management, policy research, and lobbying.
Over the last 40 years the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh has witnessed much improvement in public health facilities.
Hospitals
In 1989, there were around 899 public health institutions, including state hospital, twelve district hospitals, 189 primary health centres, besides mainstream "Western" and ayurvedic dispensaries and specialized medical institutions. In order to meet the shortage of doctors, a medical college was established in 1967, which is having post-graduate teaching facilities in some branches. Death rate has now come down by 70% due to numerous public health measures. The incidence of venereal disease, which was roughly about 17% in 1951, has now came down to 2% in 1989. Diseases like malaria and small pox has been eradicated. The Tuberculosis control programme has been a great success. People have taken a keen interest in the family planning programme. One of its interesting feature is that women have outnumbered men in its acceptance.
According to Pope Benedict XVI, its purpose "is simply to help purify reason and to contribute, here and now, to the acknowledgment and attainment of what is just. ... [The Church] has to play her part through rational argument and she has to reawaken the spiritual energy without which justice ... cannot prevail and prosper", According to Pope John Paul II, its foundation "rests on the threefold cornerstones of human dignity, solidarity and subsidiarity". These concerns echo elements of Jewish law and the prophetic books of the Old Testament, and recall the teachings of Jesus Christ recorded in the New Testament, such as his declaration that "whatever you have done for one of these least brothers of Mine, you have done for Me."

Over the past two years, thousands of vulnerable people have peered over the precipice of despair. Catholic Social Services has been their lifeline.
As we pick ourselves up after these past two years many lives remain scarred, many spirits remain broken. But CSS remains committed to serve. Please help us ensure we can answer the call when people need us the most.

Catholic Social Services: Our Mission
Catholic Social Services (CSS) is an anti-poverty agency whose goal is to empower people in need, regardless of background, with the tools they need to reach their full potential. Our efforts are focused on two specific populations that allow us to have the most significant impact in our community: families and seniors. Our unique approach to helping our clients—most of whom are marginalized or struggling with poverty—is designed to help them overcome barriers to success while respecting their dignity and acknowledging their value to our community.
