Cathinone: What You Need To Know
Cathinone is a naturally occurring amphetamine found in khat (Catha edulis). It's rarely used outside of khat, where it works in combination with other drugs to provide fairly typical stimulant effects.
Occasionally it's been sold on its own, but cathinone itself is a rare product. Khat, however, is used by millions of people every day.
The drug offers amphetamine-like effects, including stimulation, mood lift, and increased cardiovascular activity. Khat has long been used to facilitate social interaction, to provide stimulation, and to decrease hunger.
Cathinone serves as the base structure for a large class of drugs, the substituted cathinones.

Why Are Synthetic Drugs So Dangerous?
This week Reactions takes a look into the science of why synthetic drugs are so dangerous. We answer this question by examining the chemistry of two kinds of synthetic drugs: bath salts and synthetic marijuana.
*Correction: While Kratom is a plant, and not synthetic, it is listed as a Drug and Chemical of Concern by the DEA, and is marketed as a synthetic drug at gas stations and other vendors.

3,4 Ethylenepyrovaleron Exploring 3,4-EtPV: A Synthetic Cathinone with Unknown Risks
3,4-EtPV, which stands for 3,4-ethylenedioxy Pyrovalerone, is a synthetic compound that is part of the class of drugs known as cathinones. Structurally, it is related to pyrovalerone and is in the larger family of drugs known as psychoactive substances.
The "3,4-ethylenedioxy" refers to a two-oxygen bridge that connects the 3rd and 4th positions on the benzene ring, which is a modification similar to the structure of MDMA (3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine).
Pyrovalerone is a psychoactive drug that acts as a stimulant and has been used in the clinical setting for the treatment of chronic fatigue and lethargy.
As an analogue of pyrovalerone, 3,4-EtPV presumably functions as a dopamine reuptake inhibitor but might also affect other neurotransmitter systems. Its use would likely result in stimulant effects, including increased energy, alertness, and euphoria, similar to other drugs in this category.
However, like many novel psychoactive substances, the exact pharmacological profile, efficacy, and safety of 3,4-EtPV have not been well-studied in a clinical context. Drugs of this kind often present risks such as potential for abuse, unknown toxicity, and unpredictable adverse effects, particularly because they have not been subjected to the rigorous testing that established medications go through.

Joshua Keith Roberts was born in Springfield, Missouri in September of 1973. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Socio-Political Communications from Southwest Missouri State University in 1995 and graduated summa cum laude with a 4.0 GPA . He received his Juris Doctorate in 1998 from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Josh was admitted to the Missouri bar in 1998.
Early success allowed Josh to become a partner at the firm that is now known as Roberts & Easley, LLC after only two short years. Over the years he has had several judgments, verdicts and settlements of six and seven figures too numerous to mention herein. Josh is a published author having numerous articles printed in nationally selling magazines. Josh also serves his community where he is an elder, deacon and plays bass guitar in the praise team at his church. Josh has been a frequent guest on the radio program LawTalk and is an officer and director of his local bar association. Josh also serves on the local school board.
His current practice areas include personal injury, real estate, business planning and litigation, contract, civil litigation, civil rights cases and felony criminal defense. Josh spends most of his time in federal court these days.
