Who were the Cathars?
The catholic church had many enemies in medieval Europe, but one of the greatest challenges to its power and authority came not from over-mighty kings, but from heretics. One particular group, a sect of dualists who rejected the old testament, the incarnation of Christ, and the trinity, presented a very real threat to Catholic orthodoxy – the Cathars.
These Cathars, or ‘Good Christians’ as they called themselves, spread rapidly throughout the south of France in the 12th Century, quickly becoming an important part of the social fabric of the Languedoc. When the Papacy, led by Pope Innocent III, was finally roused to action, it unleashed a tidal wave of persecution and violence which permanently scarred this region of France, leading to the destruction of vast numbers of villages, towns an...

The Medieval Gnostic Theology of the Cathars - The Book of the Two Principles
The medieval Gnostic Cathars have become the stuff of legend - but what exactly was their philosophy and theology? Surviving in a single manuscript, the Book of the Two Principles (Liber de Duobus Principiis) is the most sustained work of Cathar theology to have survived all attempts to exterminate this dualist form of Christianity. This volume argues in support of radical metaphysical dualism and against the freedom of the will for the truly righteous, even polemizing against other Cathar factions. Surviving the fires of the Inquisition, the text is a fascinating glimpse into Catharism!

In the Middle Ages, Catharism - a Christian sect accused of heresy – thrived in the heart of the French Pyrenees. Its indelible imprint can still be seen today: perched on a rock some 1,200 metres high sits Montségur castle, where the Cathars lived until they were massacred on the orders of the Pope. A few kilometres away, in the village of Talairan, locals are battling to save the area’s Cathar heritage, including the little chapel of Notre Dame de L’Aire. FRANCE 24 takes you to discover it.
