Nigel George Planer (born 22 February 1953) is an English actor, comedian, novelist and playwright who is best known for his role as Neil in the cult BBC comedy The Young Ones. He has appeared in many West End musicals, including original casts of Evita, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Wicked, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. He has also appeared in Hairspray. He won a BRIT award in 1984 and has been nominated for Olivier, TMA, What's On Stage, and BAFTA awards.
The Young Ones is a British sitcom, broadcast in the United Kingdom from 1982 to 1984 in two six-part series. Shown on BBC2, it featured anarchic, offbeat humour which helped bring alternative comedy to television in the 1980s and made household names of its writers and performers. In 1985, it was shown on MTV, one of the first non-music television shows on the fledgling channel. In a 2004 poll, it ranked at number 31 in the BBC's list of Britain's Best Sitcoms.
History
The series was met with complete disbelief when the BBC first saw it, but thanks to the beginning of Channel 4 they decided to air it.
The series originated on London's comedy club circuit in the early 1980s, where most of the cast had gained popularity at The Comedy Store. Alexei Sayle was the prominent act, drawing attention as the manic, aggressive compere. Adrian Edmondson and Rik Mayall worked as the double act20th Century Coyote, which later became The Dangerous Brothers. Nigel Planer was in a double act with Peter Richardson called "The Outer Limits".
In a post-drought apocalypse United States, people kill for water. Ernest Holm lives with his son Jerome and daughter Mary in their small townhouse and field. His wife has been involved in an accident earlier and is now permanently hospitalized in a facility where she can walk while wired to a special frame. While everyone else has left the area, Ernest and his family remain, as Ernest believes that the land will grow once more if only there is irrigation. Ernest gets water for his family by delivering supplies to the "water men" who extract water from deep wells through a government deal. When his mule breaks its legs and he has to kill it, Ernest goes to Sam Lever's auction house and buys a robotic carrier machine called Simulit Shadow ("Sim") to replace it, beating the offers of Flem Lever, Sam's son, a young, troubled man who has been seeing Mary without Ernest's consent.
The Young Ones (Chinese: 彩雲飛 [traditional], 彩云飞 [simplified]; pinyin: cǎiyún fēi; lit. "flying rosy clouds") is a 1973 Taiwanese film, spoken in Mandarin. The film was adapted into screenplay by Chang Yung-hsiang (張永祥) from the novel of the similar Chinese name by Qiong Yao. It was directed by Li Hsing. It stars Chen Chen (甄珍) and Alan Tang. The music was conducted by Zuo Hong Yuan (左宏元). In the film, the man falls in love with a physically frail woman, who later dies. Then he meets another woman, who looks similar to her.
Qiong Yao's novels, caiyun fei and hai'ou fei chu (海鷗飛處), were adapted into one 1980s television series, hai'ou fei chu caiyun fei (海鷗飛處彩雲飛).
Soundtrack
Caiyun fei (彩雲飛) is a 1973 soundtrack by Teresa Teng, You Ya (尤雅), and Wan Sha-lang (萬沙浪), released by Lee Fung Records (丽风唱片). All songs were composed by Koo Yue (古月) except track ten, whose composer remains anonymous. Except tracks nine and ten, all songs are theme songs of the film. Lyrics from the titular song and "How Can I Leave You?" (我怎能離開你) are similar. "Thousand Words" (千言萬語) and "How Can I Leave You?" were re-recorded by Polydor Records (Hong Kong) for Teresa Teng's 1977 album Greatest Hits. Songs from the soundtrack have been later rendered by other singers.
The Young Ones is a video game based on the British comedy television series, The Young Ones.
The game takes place in the students' home. The player can choose to play as either Mike, Neil, Vyvyan or Rick to explore the house and enter different rooms. The other characters become computer-controlled players. All characters can move around the house, pick up and drop objects, as well as break and fix things. The characters often talk, giving the player clues as to what the character is intended to do.
The aim of the game is to try and move out of the house with all the character's belongings in the shortest time possible. This is not so easy, because these possessions are typically not in their preferred condition, or are hidden around the house, and players need various tools to get to them. The other characters will move around the house, behaving in-character, occasionally moving around or further damaging the possessions - making the task harder.
The game was published by Orpheus Software, based in Hatley St George in Bedfordshire, UK. The concept of the game was created by Orpheus director Paul Kaufman (previously director of Oric software house, Tansoft). The majority of the game was programmed by John Marshall, with input from Geoff Phillips. The Young Ones characters were licensed from the owners of the BBC TV series, Rik Mayall, Ben Elton and Lise Mayer.

We are the ones you call uneducated, we´re jaded, ill-fated. Take a look around cause we´re not separated, you hate it, we crave it. Going the distance, with a show of resistance. try and do an number, christ I´ll put you under. We are the ones you said we´re going nowhere. No hope there. You said we don´t care. Adjust your fucking mind cause we aint fucking dying. Stop prying. Stop crying.
