Montjuïc Castle (Catalan:Castell de Montjuïc, Spanish:Castillo de Montjuich) is an old military fortress, with roots dating back from 1640, currently serving as a Barcelona municipal facility, built on top of Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain.
History
The foundation stone for the basic fortification was laid out in 1640. A year later, in January 1641, the fort saw its first battle, during the Catalan Revolt when the Principality of Catalonia challenged Spain's authority. On orders from the King of Spain, Pedro Fajardo, heading an army of 26,000 men, proceeded to crush the revolt. The Spanish recaptured several cities, but they were defeated at the Battle of Montjuïc by the Catalan rebels, led by Francesc de Tamarit.
Fifty years later, in 1694, new bastions and battlements were erected and the fortress became a castle.
The old fort was however demolished in 1751 by the Spanish engineer and architect Juan Martin Cermeño, creating the current structure, still standing. The final shape of the castle took form during 1779 and 1799, when major construction works took place in order to improve the castle and accommodate the needs. It was also during this time that the castle was equipped with 120 cannons.
Montjuïc is translated as "Jew Mountain" in medieval Catalan, or is perhaps related to the Latin phrase Mons Jovicus ('hill of Jove'). A location of the same name is also found in the city of Girona. When written in a Spanish rather than Catalan context it is generally spelled Montjuich (this is old Catalan spelling before the orthographic reforms of Pompeu Fabra).
Description
Barcelona's Montjuïc is a broad shallow hill with a relatively flat top overlooking the harbour, to the southwest of the city centre. The eastern side of the hill is almost a sheer cliff, giving it a commanding view over the city's harbour immediately below. The top of the hill (a height of 184,8 m) was the site of several fortifications, the latest of which (the Castle of Montjuïc) remains today. The fortress largely dates from the 17th century, with 18th-century additions. In 1842, the garrison (loyal to the Madrid government) shelled parts of the city. It served as a prison, often holding political prisoners, until the time of General Franco. The castle was also the site of numerous executions. In 1897, an incident popularly known as Els processos de Montjuïc prompted the execution of anarchist supporters, which then led to a severe repression of the workers' struggle for their rights. On different occasions during the Spanish Civil War, both Nationalists and Republicans were executed there, each at the time when the site was held by their opponents. The Catalan nationalist leader Lluís Companys i Jover was also executed there in 1940, having been extradited to the Franco government by the Nazis.

Montjuic Castle (Castillo de Montjuïc) - Barcelona, Spain
The vantage point from atop Montjuic hill provided the perfect place for a military fortress way back when in 1640; and for centuries since, the fortress, later turned into the current castle complex form between 1751 and 1799, has played a central role in the turbulent history of Barcelona and Catalonia.
Used as both a military enclave and a prison at various stages throughout its lifetime so far, Montjuic castle was the site of many executions of prominent figures of Spanish and Catalan history, especially following the civil war.
The complex itself and the area surrounding Montjuic are rich in fascinating history and intriguing stories which you can learn all about on different tours here, such as e-bike tours and Segway tours, or indeed from any of your lovely local free tour guides ...

An electric bike will have you up to the fortress in a jiffy if just the thoughts of walking to the top make your feet ache; but you can also take the bus number 150 from Plaza de España or, perhaps the most fun way, by the Montjuïc Funicular from Paral·lel metro stop (green line L3) to Montjuïc Park Station from where you can hop in the cable-car which takes you the rest of the climb to the castle.

Located high up on the summit of Montjuic hill, the 17th century castle is a popular tourist destination today but it has not always been looked on favourably.
Having been used as a prison, execution ground and even having fired upon the city of Barcelona on multiple occasions, it is clear to see why it was not appreciated by the locals the same way as it is today.
Join me for a tour of this flat yet imposing fortress of the gunpowder age, along with an exploration of the ruins of a Medieval district called El Born that was lost when another fortress was built on the opposite side of the city.

The complex itself and the area surrounding Montjuic are rich in fascinating history and intriguing stories which you can learn all about on different tours here, such as e-bike tours and Segway tours, or indeed from any of your lovely local free tour guides in Barcelona, all available to book on FREETOUR.com.
