A lot of the controversy surrounding carrageenan has actually come from poligeenan, but has been mistaken for carrageenan (carrageenan still isn’t off the hook, though)
Carrageenan is a natural substance found in, and extracted from, seaweed, whereas poligeenan is made via a chemical process using high temperatures (used in medical imaging)
Poligeenan used to be referred to as "degraded carrageenan," hence the confusion
Carrageenan Studies
A review of carrageenan in Critical Reviews in Toxicology, entitled, “A Critical Review of the Toxicological Effects of Carrageenan and Processed Eucheuma Seaweed on the Gastrointestinal Tract” found that Carrageenan is not degraded to any extent in the gastrointestinal tract and is not absorbed from it in species examined, such as rodents, dogs, and non-human primates.
And has also been found to NOT be carcinogenic (which is what a lot of the claims surrounding it are)

Carrageenan & Gut Health
A study from Food and Cosmetics Toxicology found that poligeenan does induce diarrhea, hemorrhage, and ulcerations (in monkeys)

However, the review of carrageenan from Critical Reviews in Toxicology, mentioned above, stated that carrageenan has produced intestinal damage in some animal studies
Human Studies
A study published in The Journal of Nutrition found that human epithelial cells that were exposed to carrageenan experienced increased cell death and reduced cell proliferation

Another study, published in Biochimica et Biophysica Acta, found that when intestinal epithelial tissue were exposed to carrageenan it resulted in activation of NF-κB

This study, from Nutrition and Healthy Aging, looked at the effects of the no-carrageenan diet on ulcerative colitis disease activity (ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers (sores) in your digestive tract)
Three patients who received carrageenan-containing capsules relapsed, and none of the patients who received placebo-containing capsules relapsed
Lab tests showed increases in Interleukin-6 between the beginning and the end of study participation in the carrageenan-exposed group, but not in the placebo-group
Researchers concluded that carrageenan intake contributed to earlier relapse in patients with ulcerative colitis in remission and that restriction of dietary carrageenan may benefit patients with ulcerative colitis
So those with stomach issues are seemingly more susceptible

The use of Carrageenan in products has been steadily increasing.
Why is Carrageenan Bad for Your Health?

Carrageenan has been shown in studies to increase cellular inflammation, and has even been used in many studies to induce inflammation when needed in animal and human subjects.
Diabetes, and many other health problems, are linked to markers of inflammation
*A 2011 study published in Diabetologia looked at the effect of adding carrageenan in drinking water to glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity and insulin signalling.
-At levels lower than what is assumed in the human diet (scaled down for the weight of the mice), glucose tolerance was drastically impaired.
-This study showed that the inflammation caused by Carrageenan may contribute to the development of diabetes.
2. Cancer
In 1982 the International Agency for Research on cancer designated carrageenan as a carcinogen
3. Intestinal ulcers
Many animal studies have found a causal link between carrageenan and intestinal ulcers
4. Increased Intestinal Permeability
Some studies have found that carrageenan may cause increased intestinal permeability, which makes it harder for us to absorb nutrients. Large particles may also escape and cause damage to lymph nodes
→ Inflammatory bowel disease is linked to numbers 3 and 4.
How to Avoid Carrageenan
1. Whenever possible, avoid prepackaged and processed foods
2. Read labels and avoid foods with carrageenan
3. There are many helpful lists online to help point you towards foods without this added in, such as the Cornucopia guide to avoiding organic foods with carrageenan

Carrageenan - What It Is and Why You Should Avoid It
We all have heard that processed foods are not good for us, however understanding why can be complicated.
Today we will go over one substance that is added to foods that is dangerous for our health: Carrageenan
Carrageenan is a compound extracted from red seaweed that is added to processed foods to thicken and improve the texture.
-Commonly found in low fat dairy products like yogurts and ice cream
-Other foods include processed meats, infant formulas, soy milks and diet drinks
-Also found in pet foods, shampoos, toothpastes, room air fresheners, cosmetics and other products
The use of Carrageenan in products has been steadily increasing.
Why is Carrageenan Bad for Your Health?
