Carbon capture and storage research at the British Geological Survey
The success of the energy transition relies on a range of low-carbon technologies being adopted around the world. Carbon capture and storage is one of these low-carbon technologies.
Carbon dioxide capture and storage can be applied to emissions from large sources such as power stations, cement factories or oil refineries, by storing more CO2 than is produced the negative emissions will enable us to achieve net zero targets. The carbon dioxide, or CO2, is captured at the source then transported and permanently stored in geological formations deep underground.
At the British Geological Survey our research aims to make C02 storage a permanent , useful and cost-effective element of the energy transition. We study:

Carbon Capture & Storage - How It Works
Shell’s Quest carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Alberta, Canada, is designed to capture and safely store more than one million tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) each year – equal to the emissions from about 250,000 cars. CCS is one of the only technologies that can significantly reduce carbon emissions from industrial sectors of the economy, and the Quest project is a blueprint for future CCS projects globally. See how the project will capture one-third of the emissions from Shell’s Scotford Upgrader, which turns oil sands bitumen into synthetic crude that can be refined into fuel and other products.

Today, mankind’s collective activity deposits about 50 billion tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere each year. All of this carbon dioxide traps heat from the sun and warms the entire planet, creating new conditions that are changing life as we know it.
So scientists are suggesting Co2 extraction methods in an effort to become carbon neutral - a cycle in which we clean up as much carbon dioxide as we emit.

The Tough Reality of Carbon Capture & Storage
Depending who you ask, carbon capture and storage (CCS) might seem like a vital fix to climate change, or a dangerous distraction from the hard work we need to do decarbonising - from protecting nature to building renewables. But when it comes to tackling climate change, there are no simple truths - carbon capture and storage is both hero and villain of our fight against global warming.

How does Carbon Capture & Storage work?
Climate change is a real problem we face together, and the Australian Coal Association wants to be a part of the solution.
That is why we have invested $1 billion into Carbon Capture and Storage technologies. This video explains how the three methods work (Pre-combustion capture, Post-combustion capture and Oxyfuel). Once the carbon has been captured, the carbon is stored safely deep underground, a process known as geosequestration. This mimics a natural process that hydrocarbons like oil and natural gas have been doing for millions of years.

Why carbon capture needs a reality check
Oil companies are pouring billions into technologies to capture CO2 at fossil fuel plants or even suck it out of the air. They have made big promises — but where are the results?

Transitioning to greener industry: Navigating carbon challenges
Welcome to our COP29 special series, Greener China: A journey to 2060.
Carbon intensive industrial plants in Northeast China are committed to a green production path amid the country’s target to reach carbon net zero by 2060. However, issues like funds, technology and talent exodus are slowing down their steps. We explore what challenges the industrial giants in the region encounter and what the potential solutions are.

- How stored CO2 might interact with surrounding rocks
- Technologies to demonstrate that storage is permanent
- Long term operation and closure of a site
- Social attitudes and community concerns.
Carbon dioxide capture and storage can help us to reduce our overall emissions to zero. We are committed to increasing our scientific understanding and addressing gaps in our knowledge to enable it to play a key role in the energy transition.

For the engineers who work on carbon removal at a large scale, the dream is to devise a closed-loop system in which the carbon released could be treated as a commodity or resource, rather than a waste product.
Now, a Canada-based company called Carbon Engineering is turning this dream into a reality, using cutting-edge carbon capture technology called "direct air capture" to clean the air.

Most of the data and research comes from three excellent reports by the Australia Institute:
🔸 "Sunk Costs": documenting CCS's failure to meet every, single, target, even those set by the industry. The Conclusion is stone cold brutal. The authors are killers. I love it: https://australiainstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/P546-Sunk-costs-WEB.pdf
🔸 "Money for Nothing": focusing in on the Australian government's experiments with CCS and the eye-watering amounts of $$ that have been sharted away on this bullshit. This shows why CCS is better described as a PR campaign than a technology: https://australiainstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/P357-Money-for-nothing_0.pdf
🔸 "Gorgon-tuan Problem": zooming in even further to Australia's CCS adventures with a closer look at the CCS failfest at Chevron's Gorgon LNG plant in WA: https://australiainstitute.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/12/P635-Gorgon-tuan-Problem-Web.pdf
