Candy Clark on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson
I’ve been a candy fan all my life, I’ve been a Candy Clark fan almost as long. Her Academy Award Nominated performance as Debbie Dunham in American Graffiti is unforgettable.
We started with a few tech issues. It was worth the little time and frustration for the great stories and fun which followed.
We talked vaccines, pandemic protocols, adjusted living, shopping, eating, to making new friends in th midst of it. Candy's got her neighbors, I've got the COVID crazies.
We touched on the lunacy but focused on hope.
Candy walked us through her humble beginnings in Texas, where her life’s ambition was to be a secretary/ receptionist. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. Modeling brought her to NY for a visit. Before touching down she decided to stay. With $40 in her pocket, she mad...

Candy Clark of American Graffiti Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson
Crazy, ridiculous fun with Academy Award Nominee for American Graffiti, Candy Clark. I knew we had 2 degrees of separation all over the place, I did not anticipate feeling like we’d be separated at birth. I was the runt, but still. Oh, how I love this woman!
Candy walked us through her less than idyllic childhood in Texas, where her life’s ambition was to be a secretary/ receptionist. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. As her plane descended on NY, Candy decided before touching down it was where she wanted to stay. Modeling and doing a few commercials, she sought extra work and attempted to fight her way out of becoming a featured actress for director John Houston. Having had nary an acting lesson, nor performed in any school plays, Candy starred opposite Stacy Leach and Jeff Bri...

With $40 in her pocket, she made it work. Her acting career began with director John Houston, opposite Stacy Keach and Jeff Bridges, who became her live-in boyfriend. All while she was insisting, “I just want to be an extra!” Words no one else has said, ever.
There’s the whole American Graffiti story––she told us all about it, from audition to shoot, to Oscar nomination, to the red carpet with her beau Jeff, to the reading of her category. Fab!
We started to talk about Bowie and The Man Who Fell To Earth, but we'd been yakking a good while, and Candy wisely decided to save it for next time.
So.... stay tuned for Part 2.
Candy's one of my favorite people to run around with… been missing her muchly. It was so great to see her GORGEOUSNESS and ketchup.
Such fun in the time of corona. Sans the beer.

Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfus, Cindy Williams, Mackenzie Phillips, and Paul LeMat were all unknowns. But not for long. It shot like a rocket on opening day and changed the music we listened to, the clothes we wore, and the cars we drove. Well, it did for many. Without support from the studio, Candy campaigned for an Oscar nod and earned it. Co-starring with David Bowie for The Man Who Fell To Earth, with Buck Henry and Rip Torn, didn’t suck neither. Until a fatal edit derailed the film, For a time. Years later, Candy fought for the release of the original director’s cut and the film shot to cult phenomenon, through till today.
