Port Harcourt (Igbo:Ụ́gwụ́ Ọ́chá;Pidgin: Po-ta-kot) is the capital of Rivers State, Nigeria. It lies along the Bonny River and is located in the Niger Delta. According to the 2006 census, the Port Harcourt urban area has a population of 1,382,592.
The area that became Port Harcourt in 1912 was before that part of the farmlands of the Diobu village group of the Ikwerre, an Igbo sub-group. The colonial administration of Nigeria created the port to export coal from the collieries of Enugu located 243 kilometres (151mi) north of Port Harcourt, to which it was linked by a railway called the Eastern Line, also built by the British.
In 1956 crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities at Oloibiri, and Port Harcourt's economy turned to petroleum when the first shipment of Nigerian crude oil was exported through the city in 1958. Through the benefits of the Nigerian petroleum industry, Port Harcourt was further developed, with aspects of modernisation such as overpasses and city blocks. Oil firms that currently have offices in the city include Royal Dutch Shell and Chevron.
Port Harcourt Local Government Area (PHALGA) is a local government area of Rivers State in southern Nigeria. It is one of the 23 local government areas created for the state. Its administrative seat is located in Port Harcourt.
Geography
Port Harcourt local government area is located 52 kilometres (32mi) southeast of Ahoada and about 40 kilometres (25mi) northwest of Bori. It is bounded to the south by Okrika, to the east by Eleme, to the north by Obio-Akpor and to the west by Degema. It has a total size of 109 square kilometres (42 sq mi).
The local government area is part of the Rivers East Senatorial district consisting 20 electoral wards. The Mayor, who is the highest-ranking official in the Port Harcourt local government is elected by popular vote and presides as both head of wards and head of the local government council.

A Side Of Nigeria The Media Wont Show You - Port Harcourt
Known as the oil capital of Nigeria, Port Harcourt offers a rare blend of industrial might and modern urban charm. From its upscale neighborhoods to its thriving commercial hubs, Port Harcourt is not just a city—it’s a lifestyle. Lined with tree-shaded streets and expansive, well-maintained homes, the neighborhood reflects the rising prosperity of the city’s middle and upper classes. Further exploration brought us to New GRA, a hub for chic urban living with luxury apartments and gated communities that rival some of the finest in the country. These neighborhoods embody Port Harcourt’s reputation as a city on the rise, offering security, privacy, and modern amenities.

Port Harcourt city is the capital of River State and one of the beautiful cities to visit or live in Nigeria.
It is very popular as many foreigners also live here due to the presence of oil companies such as Agip, Shell, or Mobil.
Port Harcourt city has fascinating scenery. Growing up in the city in the ’80s the city used to be very calm, representing its Nickname the garden city. Although a lot has changed today, with the increasing population I find the city a lot noisier with annoying police sirens on the road in most places as at the time of my visit in November 2021.
Traffic also tends to build up in some parts of the city especially in the evening. But the good part is that there has been lots of road infrastructure development on-going in the city, so hopefully things will get much better.
Port Harcourt Nigeria is a bustling city with lots of commercial activities and just like Lagos, you find that Port Harcourt has a vibrant and exciting nightlife with lots of pubs, hotels, clubs, and joints.
By the way, the hospitality business since to be doing well in this city, as most hotels are always fully booked.
Contrary to what most people think, Port Harcourt is not an expensive city to live in especially when compared to Abuja or Lagos.
Transportation is affordable or should I say the same as most part of southern Nigeria.
Housing is also affordable; you can get a standard 2 bedroom in a choice location like GRA for 1million Naira. But if you were to compare that to Abuja, in a choice location like Maitama, that same standard of the building will for 4million naira per annum.
Food is also affordable, been a riverine area, you will find lots of fresh fish, seafood and meal of different delicacies.
And talking of food, your experience in Port Harcourt will never be complete until you try out the most popular street food in Port Harcourt called Bole. A roaster Plantain with oil-papered Sause that goes with roasted fish.
There are also lots of places to hang out in Port Harcourt, but the most notable one is the Pleasure Park. From Sport to games, to movies, to enjoying nature, you will find it all here. you can check out this video to learn more about it.
Port Harcourt is definitely one of the great places to visit for vacation or to settle down. No one video is enough to tell you about this oil-rich city, but if you like to see more how the city looks like, we have a drone shot and road drives around the major part of the city coming soon.
Make sure you subscribe and follow the port Harcourt series.

Further exploration brought us to New GRA, a hub for chic urban living with luxury apartments and gated communities that rival some of the finest in the country. These neighborhoods embody Port Harcourt’s reputation as a city on the rise, offering security, privacy, and modern amenities.
Port Harcourt’s economy thrives on oil and gas, with multinational corporations and local enterprises alike driving growth. But the city is not solely defined by its petroleum wealth. Manufacturing is a key player, with industries ranging from steel to consumer goods contributing to its industrial prowess. Agriculture, often overshadowed, also presents significant opportunities, with the fertile Niger Delta region providing a base for agribusiness ventures in palm oil, cassava, and fisheries.
The city’s chic status is more than just a title—it’s a lifestyle reflected in its trendy cafés, upscale restaurants, and vibrant nightlife. Areas like Peter Odili Road and Woji Road feature a blend of stylish boutiques, fine dining options, and lively entertainment spots. This cosmopolitan vibe attracts professionals and entrepreneurs, making Port Harcourt a magnet for talent and innovation.
Port Harcourt’s charm extends beyond its infrastructure. The people of the city are its true gems, known for their warmth and hospitality. Conversations with locals reveal a deep sense of pride in their city, coupled with a willingness to share its best-kept secrets. Whether offering directions or sharing recommendations for the best suya spot, Port Harcourt’s residents embody the city’s spirit of inclusivity.
Our next stop was the vibrant and bustling city center, the administrative and commercial heartbeat of Port Harcourt. This lively hub is where the pulse of governance and business resonates, with iconic structures like the Rivers State Government Secretariat standing proudly as a symbol of leadership and history. Alongside these historic landmarks, sleek modern skyscrapers pierce the skyline, offering a striking visual of how tradition and progress coexist seamlessly in this dynamic city.
The city center is also rich in cultural and recreational landmarks that add to its charm. Among them is the renowned Port Harcourt Pleasure Park, a meticulously designed oasis that provides a tranquil escape for residents and visitors alike. The park features beautifully landscaped gardens, walking trails, and leisure facilities, creating a peaceful retreat amid the city's energetic rhythm. Nearby, lively marketplaces and shopping complexes offer a glimpse into the city’s thriving economy and the vibrant daily lives of its people.
To truly showcase the scale and diversity of Port Harcourt, we ventured to the other side of the city, where we explored more of its upscale mixed-use neighborhoods. Places like Peter Odili Road and Golf Estate highlight a seamless blend of commercial and residential sophistication. These areas are characterized by luxury homes, office complexes, trendy restaurants, and exclusive shopping centers, catering to the city’s upwardly mobile population. These mixed-use developments also underscore Port Harcourt’s potential as a destination for both business and leisure.
Port Harcourt’s chic reputation is evident in its vibrant social scene. From stylish cafés to high-end dining establishments, the city offers a cosmopolitan lifestyle rarely associated with Nigeria’s southern cities. Areas like Woji and Trans-Amadi further illustrate this trend, with entertainment hubs that draw locals and expatriates alike.
The city’s charm is amplified by its residents, known for their friendliness and hospitality. Every interaction reveals a pride in their city and a willingness to share its hidden treasures. Whether offering tips on local attractions or inviting you to try regional delicacies, Port Harcourt’s people make the city feel like home.
In every corner of the city center, from the stately government buildings to the buzzing streets lined with cafes, restaurants, and boutique shops, Port Harcourt exudes an air of promise and potential, capturing the essence of a city on the rise.

Violence Breaks Out In Port Harcourt Following Fubara Order For Caretaker-Takeover Of LGAs
Governor Fubara's directive to heads of administration in the 23 local government areas of the state to assume leadership of the council areas generated spontaneous reactions in most local government areas in Rivers State.
At the Secretariat of Port Harcourt City Council, there were sporadic gunshots, as the Police scared away scores of youths, who stormed the premises to protest.
The youths said they were at the secretariat for a peaceful demonstration against the immediate past council Chairmen, whom they claimed refused to vacate office after the expiration of their tenure.

Ankko Briggs an environmentalist reacted to the gruesome murder of four University of Port Harcourt undergraduates in Aluu/Ekwere community in Port Harcourt River state saying there is no human decency anymore in the country and she is blaming these on government and the people as everybody is learning to mind their businesses and government on its part is turning a blind eye to these rot in the country.
The environmentalist who appeared on the Breakfast show Sunrise Daily said the Aluu/Ekwere commu8nity must be held responsible for the gruesome murder of the four undergraduates of the University and a death penalty be passed down to the perpetrator of these acts, also the police officials manning that community should also be held accountable as the killing must not go unpunished.
Reacting to the recent flood that ravaged the states in Nigeria, with particular focus on the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta activist said help is needed internationally to curb the flood as the Federal, State and Local governments does not have the capacity to control and phase out the floods plaguing the states.
Securing lives and property is the core responsibility of the Government of the country, she concluded.

Known as the oil capital of Nigeria, Port Harcourt offers a rare blend of industrial might and modern urban charm. From its upscale neighborhoods to its thriving commercial hubs, Port Harcourt is not just a city—it’s a lifestyle. We began our journey in Old GRA, a prestigious residential area that exudes elegance and tranquility.
