Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is an organisation that advocates unilateral nuclear disarmament by the United Kingdom, international nuclear disarmament and tighter international arms regulation through agreements such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It opposes military action that may result in the use of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and the building of nuclear power stations in the UK.
CND was formed in 1957 and since that time has periodically been at the forefront of the peace movement in the UK. It claims to be Europe's largest single-issue peace campaign. Between 1959 and 1965 it organised the Aldermaston March, which was held over the Easter weekend from the Atomic Weapons Establishment near Aldermaston to Trafalgar Square, London.

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (NZ)
Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND(NZ)) was co-founded in Christchurch New Zealand in 1959 with the help of Elsie Locke and Mary Woodward. Mabel Hetherington, who belonged to an earlier generation of peace activists from England, was largely responsible for setting up CND(NZ) in Auckland when she moved to New Zealand after the second world war. With Alison Duff and Pat Denby, Hetherington carried CND(NZ) in Auckland through the 1960s. It was largely from CND(NZ) and the Peace Media that Greenpeace New Zealand evolved.
In 1959, responding to rising public concern following the British H-Bomb tests in Australia, New Zealand voted in the UN to condemn nuclear testing while the United Kingdom, United States and France voted against, and Australia abstained. In the early 1960s CND(NZ) New Zealand organised marches and speeches throughout the country to highlight the concerns about French atmospheric nuclear tests at Mururoa atoll in French Polynesia. In 1961, CND(NZ) with the support of other peace groups urged the New Zealand government to declare it ‘will not acquire or use nuclear weapons' and to withdraw from nuclear alliances such as ANZUS. In 1963 CND(NZ) Auckland presented the ‘No Bombs South of the Line' petition with 80,238 signatures to the New Zealand Parliament calling on the government to sponsor an international conference to discuss establishing a nuclear-free-zone in the southern hemisphere. It was the biggest New Zealand petition since the one in 1893 demanding votes for women.

Nuclear disarmament
Nuclear disarmament refers to both the act of reducing or eliminating nuclear weapons and to the end state of a nuclear-weapon-free world, in which nuclear weapons are completely eliminated.
Nuclear disarmament groups include the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Peace Action, Greenpeace, International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, Mayors for Peace, Global Zero, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, and the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation. There have been many large anti-nuclear demonstrations and protests. On June 12, 1982, one million people demonstrated in New York City's Central Park against nuclear weapons and for an end to the cold war arms race. It was the largest anti-nuclear protest and the largest political demonstration in American history.
In recent years, some U.S. elder statesmen have also advocated nuclear disarmament. Sam Nunn, William Perry, Henry Kissinger, and George Shultz have called upon governments to embrace the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons, and in various op-ed columns have proposed an ambitious program of urgent steps to that end. The four have created the Nuclear Security Project to advance this agenda. Organisations such as Global Zero, an international non-partisan group of 300 world leaders dedicated to achieving nuclear disarmament, have also been established.

I look forward to carrying out the functions assigned by the Treaty, including in preparation for the first Meeting of States Parties.
Nuclear weapons pose growing dangers and the world needs urgent action to ensure their elimination and prevent the catastrophic human and environmental consequences any use would cause.
The elimination of nuclear weapons remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.
I call on all States to work together to realize this ambition to advance common security and collective safety.

United Nations, New York, 24 September 2009: The Security Council, in a summit meeting this morning presided over by the US President Barack Obama, adopted Resolution 1887, which, among other things, calls upon the States that are party to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) to comply fully with all their obligations and fulfill their treaty commitments. It also calls upon all States to sign and ratify the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).
Todays meeting only the fifth in the Council's history to be held at the level of heads of State and government began with the unanimous adoption of a resolution by which the 15-member body voiced grave concern about the threat of nuclear proliferation and the need for global action to combat it.
Although we averted a nuclear nightmare during the Cold War, we now face proliferation of a scope and complexity that demands new strategies and new approaches, said Mr. Obama, the first US President to preside over a Security Council meeting.
Just one nuclear weapon exploded in a city be it New York or Moscow, Tokyo or Beijing, London or Paris could kill hundreds of thousands of people. And it would badly destabilize our security, our economies, and our very way of life.

“We are pushing closer and closer to that point where [nuclear weapons are] eventually going to be used, and we have to drastically change,” says Beatrice Fihn, the executive director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, ICAN.
“It is the nuclear-armed states, and it's the nuclear-allied states in NATO, for example, that really have to lead this charge,” she says of the push for disarmament.
ICAN was awarded a Nobel Peace Prize for spearheading the 2017 Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Fihn says it is imperative for all countries to eliminate nuclear weapons, adding that the treaty is a “way of creating a revolution in this nuclear structure that we created”.
“The powerful have always lost their power when the majority has risen up and stood against it.”

UN Secretary-General António Guterres said the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is “an important step towards the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and a strong demonstration of support for multilateral approaches to nuclear disarmament.”

I am pleased to recognize today’s entry into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons — the first multilateral nuclear disarmament treaty in more than two decades.
The Treaty is an important step towards the goal of a world free of nuclear weapons and a strong demonstration of support for multilateral approaches to nuclear disarmament.
I commend the States that have ratified the Treaty and welcome the instrumental role of civil society in advancing negotiation and entry into force.
The survivors of nuclear explosions and nuclear tests offered tragic testimonies and were a moral force behind the Treaty. Entry into force is a tribute to their enduring advocacy.
I look forward to carrying out the functions assigned by the Treaty, including in preparation for the first Meeting of States Parties.
Nuclear weapons pose growing dangers and the world needs urgent action to ensure their elimination and prevent the catastrophic human and environmental consequences any use would cause.
The elimination of nuclear weapons remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.
I call on all States to work together to realize this ambition to advance common security and collective safety.

Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament
The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) is an organisation that advocates unilateral nuclear disarmament by the United Kingdom, international nuclear disarmament and tighter international arms regulation through agreements such as the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. It opposes military action that may result in the use of nuclear, chemical or biological weapons and the building of nuclear power stations in the UK.
CND was formed in 1957 and since that time has periodically been at the forefront of the peace movement in the UK. It claims to be Europe's largest single-issue peace campaign. Between 1959 and 1965 it organised the Aldermaston March, which was held over the Easter weekend from the Atomic Weapons Establishment near Aldermaston to Trafalgar Square, London.
