Camden Expedition Sites

The Camden Expedition Sites are a National Historic Landmark District consisting of eight historic sites where events of the American Civil War's Camden Expedition occurred. The sites are spread across six or seven counties.

Elkin's Ferry Battleground, in Clark and Nevada counties

Prairie d'Ane Battlefield, near Prescott in Nevada County

the Confederate State Capitol building, in Historic Washington State Park, Hempstead County

Fort Southerland on Bradley Ferry Road, in Camden, Ouachita

Fort Lookout on Van Buren Road, in Camden, Ouachita County

Poison Springs Battleground State Park, a state park on Highway 76, near Chidester in Ouachita County.

Marks' Mills Battlefield, a state park near New Edinburg in Cleveland County

Jenkins' Ferry Battlefield, a state park near Leola in Grant County

Each of the sites is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The National Historic Landmark District was declared in 1994.

It is stated at the National Historic Landmark summary that there are nine sites included in the NHL, although that summary only lists only the above eight by name. The landmark nomination document clearly describes only eight sites. An Arkansas state webpage states that the Old U.S. Arsenal Building (meaning the Tower Building of the Little Rock Arsenal, in Little Rock, Pulaski County, Arkansas, where the expedition started) is included in the landmark. The photo set that accompanies the landmark nomination includes photos of the U.S. Arsenal Building as well as of the eight other sites, so it is unclear whether the Arsenal site is part of the landmark or not. It is unclear whether it was intended to be included but was dropped, or whether it was added after the nomination document was completed.

Camden Expedition

The Camden Expedition (March 23 – May 2, 1864) was a military campaign in southern and central Arkansas during the American Civil War. It involved Union forces stationed at Little Rock and Fort Smith under the command of Major General Frederick Steele.

Prelude

The United States War Department, under the direction of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, had developed a strategic goal to reassert Federal control over Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas. This was part of a much larger effort to move simultaneously against Confederate forces in a number of theaters. Separate Union columns were to destroy the remaining Southern troops in South Arkansas and Northern Louisiana, then join together for an all-out push into Texas, essentially ending the war in that region.

The Arkansas phase of this Red River Campaign was entitled the Camden Expedition, an effort endorsed by Ulysses S. Grant. The plan called for Steele's force to march to Shreveport, Louisiana, where it would link up with an amphibious expedition led by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel P. Banks and Rear Admiral David D. Porter, whose force was to advance up the Red River Valley; once joined, the Union force was to strike into Texas. Steele would garrison Shreveport while Banks forged ahead into northeastern Texas. But the two pincers never converged, and Steele's columns suffered terrible losses in a series of battles with Confederate forces led by Maj. Gen. Sterling Price and Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith.
