The Calydonian or AetolianBoar (Greek:ὁ Καλυδώνιος κάπρος or ὁ Καλυδώνιος ὗς) is one of the monsters of Greek mythology that had to be overcome by heroes of the Olympian age. Sent by Artemis to ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia because its king failed to honor her in his rites to the gods, it was killed in the Calydonian Hunt, in which many male heroes took part, but also a powerful woman, Atalanta, who won its hide by first wounding it with an arrow. This outraged some of the men, with tragic results. Strabo was under the impression that the Calydonian Boar was an offspring of the Crommyonian Sow vanquished by Theseus.
Importance in Greek mythology and art
The Calydonian Boar is one of the chthonic monsters in Greek mythology, each set in a specific locale. Sent by Artemis to ravage the region of Calydon in Aetolia, it met its end in the Calydonian Hunt, in which all the heroes of the new age pressed to take part, with the exception of Heracles, who vanquished his own Goddess-sent Erymanthian Boar separately. Since the mythic event drew together numerous heroes—among whom were many who were venerated as progenitors of their local ruling houses among tribal groups of Hellenes into Classical times—the Calydonian Boar hunt offered a natural subject in classical art, for it was redolent with the web of myth that gathered around its protagonists on other occasions, around their half-divine descent and their offspring. Like the quest for the Golden Fleece (Argonautica) or the Trojan War that took place the following generation, the Calydonian Hunt is one of the nodes in which much Greek myth comes together.

Meleager and the Calydonian Boar Hunt | Greek Myths
It's time for another Greek Myth! Today we're hearing all about the Great Meleager and his quest to save the countryside from a giant boar set loose by the goddess Artemis.

The Calydonian boar is a well-known creature in Greek mythology, renowned for its ferocity and the havoc it wreaked upon the fields of Calydon. But who was responsible for sending this monstrous beast to terrorize the kingdom?
According to the ancient texts, it was none other than the goddess Artemis, also known as Diana in Roman mythology, who was responsible for sending the Calydonian boar to Calydon. The reason behind her decision to unleash such a formidable creature upon the land was the result of the King of Calydon's blatant disrespect for her.
Artemis was a revered deity in ancient Greece, often associated with chastity, hunting, and the wilderness. She was also known for her fierce and vengeful nature when it came to those who dared to cross her or show her disrespect. In the case of the King of Calydon, it was his failure to honor her properly that sparked her wrath and led to the unleashing of the Calydonian boar.
The details of the King's disrespectful actions towards Artemis are not explicitly mentioned in the ancient texts, but it is clear that they were severe enough to provoke such a strong reaction from the goddess. As a result, Artemis decided to teach the King and the people of Calydon a lesson by sending the monstrous boar to ravage their fields and bring chaos and destruction to their land.
The Calydonian boar was a formidable and fearsome creature, known for its massive size, sharp tusks, and ferocious temperament. It was a creature that struck fear into the hearts of the people of Calydon and wreaked havoc upon their once fertile fields. The king and his people were left to deal with the devastating consequences of their disrespect towards the goddess, as they struggled to defend themselves against the relentless attacks of the boar.
In response to the chaos and destruction caused by the boar, the King of Calydon called upon the greatest heroes of Greece to come to his aid and hunt down the monstrous beast. The heroes who answered his call included some of the most renowned figures in Greek mythology, such as Atalanta, Meleager, and Theseus, among others. These brave warriors and hunters banded together to form a formidable hunting party, determined to track down and slay the Calydonian boar.
The hunt for the boar was no easy feat, as the creature proved to be a formidable and elusive adversary. It took the combined skills and bravery of the heroes to finally corner the boar and put an end to its reign of terror. In the end, it was Meleager who delivered the fatal blow to the boar, bringing an end to its destructive rampage and earning himself a prominent place in the annals of Greek mythology.
The story of the Calydonian boar hunt and the role of Artemis in sending the creature to Calydon serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of disrespecting the gods in ancient Greek mythology. The tale also highlights the bravery and heroism of the ancient Greek heroes who banded together to confront and defeat the monstrous boar, showcasing the valor and skill of these legendary figures.
Ultimately, the story of the Calydonian boar and the role of Artemis in sending the creature to Calydon stands as a testament to the power and influence of the gods in ancient Greek mythology, as well as the consequences of defying them. It is a tale that has endured through the ages, captivating audiences with its themes of vengeance, bravery, and the enduring power of the divine in the ancient world.

Both versions don't end well for the poor Calydonian Boar...or Meleager I guess.
