The Calder rises on the eastern slopes of the Pennines and flows through green countryside, former woollen-mill villages, and large and small towns before joining the River Aire near Castleford.
The river's valley is generally known as the Calder Valley. The name Calderdale usually refers to the large urban and rural borough (centred on Halifax) through which the upper river flows. The lower reaches flow through the boroughs of Kirklees (based on Huddersfield) and Wakefield. However, the river does not flow through the centres of Halifax and Huddersfield, which are on the Calder's main tributaries, Hebble Brook and the River Colne respectively. The only large town centres through which the Calder flows are Brighouse, Mirfield, Dewsbury and the city of Wakefield.
The river itself is only navigable in short sections, but these sections are connected by artificial "cuts" (e.g. Horbury Cut) to form the Calder and Hebble Navigation, a popular leisure waterway which is part of the connected inland waterway network of England and Wales.
Since the constituency's creation in 1983 it has comprised the Metropolitan Borough of Calderdale wards of Brighouse, Calder Valley, Elland, Greetland and Stainland, Hipperholme and Lightcliffe, Luddendenfoot, Rastrick, Ryburn, and Todmorden.
The constituency was created in 1983, primarily from the former seat of Sowerby as well as parts of Brighouse and Spenborough. Historically a bellwether seat between Labour and the Conservatives, in the 2010 general election the seat became the closest three-way marginal in the north of England, with less than 1,000 votes between the Labour and Liberal Democrat Candidates in terms of 2nd and 3rd place, although with a significant Conservative majority for 1st place. In 2015 Labour regained significant vote share with the Liberal Democrats falling back, but the seat was retained by the Conservatives in line with national trends maintaining the bellwether status.

Calder Valley
It was a horrible morning for mid summer but we can’t control the British weather. The route takes us to Salford Crescent then reverses to take us through Victoria to Rochdale and then through Summit Tunnel to emerge in the picturesque Calder valley. We then take Bradley Wood chord to bring us back towards Manchester but there is method in the madness - it allows us to pick up Huddersfield before the train continues to Newcastle. Information includes the Summit Tunnel fire and braking during low adhesion.

Photographing trains Yorkshire Pennines - Transpennine Calder Valley Diversion
The Calder Valley line was incredibly busy with all Transpennine services running through Todmorden with the line through Huddersfield closed, all Transpennine Express services were diverted over the Calder Valley Mainline. A fine Saturday spent photographing the line from the Yorkshire side of Summit Tunnel to Walsden, Gauxholme Viaduct, Todmorden, Hall Royd Junction, Horsfall Tunnel and Hebden Bridge.
It was good to catch the Transpennine 802 Nova units and a couple of Class 68 locos in unfamiliar territory.

Follow the first part of this epic journey with DB Cargo. Driver Lee Yarker takes us over the Calder Valley and through Manchester via the notorious “Miles Platting Bank”.
