Caitlin Cary was the youngest of seven siblings (all older brothers). Her entire family was involved in music to some degree, with her parents' love for singing and her father's interest in building instruments. She had begun to play the violin at age five, but put it aside as a teenager. In addition to the violin, she also played her father's harpsichords, where she wrote some of her own songs.
Cary went to college at the College of Wooster in Ohio. She began working on a degree in English. During her college time, she picked up playing the violin again, and she formed a small 'jokey' band called Garden Weasels. After graduating from the College of Wooster, she enrolled in the graduate program in creative at North Carolina State. During this time, in 1993, musician Ryan Adams contacted Cary and asked her if she would play violin in a band that he was starting. Cary agreed to join, and they formed Whiskeytown.

Caitlin Cary & Ryan Adams - The Battle
The Battle
When I am buried don't visit my grave
God cannot save me from the sins I've embraced
Pay your respects at that old liquor store
Where I won the battle, but I lost the war.
You mine for silver, and I pan for gold
You keep yours hidden, while all my are sold
You tell the truth, and I lie and I barter
And I drink and I cry, and I pass out at night
I've always cheated, though I've never stolen no
I've wanted things that you ain't never thought of
Pay your respects to that gambling' score
Where I won the battle, and I lost the war
They always told me when death came my sins would be
Cast out forgotten, laid to rest with my body
Pay your respects to that old church-house door
Where I won the battle, and I lost the war.

You keep his picture close beside you It's girlish wishes that never came true But the pony you wanted when you were a child Is dead in the ground by now You bring the bar home and the smell of your hair It wilts the flowers that your girlhood put there You're disappointed before you lay your head down You're tired of your life in this town In a while nothing will hurt anymore And the hall light won't wake you behind a close door Everyone cries and everything dies In a while, in a while, in a while In a while, in a while, in a while Can praying save you as you wait by the phone? It didn't seem to, 'cause you're still alone And your little girl wishes one thing as a dime Nobody can help you this time But in a while nothing will hurt anymore And the hall light won't wake you behind a close door Everyone cries and everything dies In a while, in a while, in a while In a while, in a while, in a while It's horses and hay and lovers hold sway Giving yourself away The devils and graves and pink toes and paints And soldiers to say lullabies, high In a while nothing will hurt anymore And the hall light won't wake you behind a close door Everyone cries and everything dies In a while, in a while, in a while
