K100 was being programmed out of Moncton and in order to cut costs, MBS decided that instead of flipping K100 to a classic hits format they would change the format to a contemporary hit radio format to more effectively compete with rival CHWV-FM. CIOK-FM's switch to contemporary hit radio joined sister station CKCW-FM in Moncton, which moved from top 40 to hot AC by that same time. Nielsen BDS later moved the station to the Canadian hot adult contemporary panel after the flip of this station to top 40.

Mike Novak on K100 Los Angeles
I remember the days of listening to Mike Novak on K100 (KIQQ) Los Angeles and B100 (KFMB) San Diego. When I finally met him years later, he was the president and CEO of EMF. Head of Christian music stations, K.Love and Air1. Here is Mike Novak having fun on the not yet Top 40 radio station K100 in 1977.

Jim Carson K100 FM in Los Angeles
When Bill Drake started K100 (KIQQ) to start a Top 40 station on the FM in Los Angeles, it started off as a great idea. Bringing two of the hottest 93 KHJ DJs Robert W. Morgan and The Real Don Steele over to do mornings and afternoons. But with little personality allowed, the station didn't really do well.
And they great jocks on the station later in the K100 years. Rich Brother Robbin, Rodger Christian, Beaver Cleaver (Ken Levine)! As the years went on, and AM Top 40 was slowing dying as listeners were moving to FM, K100 could have really done something huge. They could have beat KIIS FM to the punch. Had Jimi Fox and his team in 1976 not put TenQ on 1020 AM and put the format and energy on 100.3 FM, there could've been a different course in the history of LA radio. Sorry. I digress.

Sorry. I digress.
But it just sat there, lackluster, and even playing some softer older songs. Perhaps K100 had no budget? Maybe there was no hindsight?
It took the 1980's to roll in before they ditched the K100 and simply used their call letters, KIQQ. And then they started to fight for a piece of the FM Top 40 pie.
On this aircheck from March of 1976, Jim Carson, another great LA jock, rolls thorugh the format, but still sounds great.
