Life in Lubbock, Texas, taught me two things: One is that God loves you and you're going to burn in Hell. The other is that sex is the most awful, filthy thing on Earth and you should save it for someone you love. -- Butch Hancock
Hancock entered architecture school but dropped out in 1968 and worked for nearly a year driving a tractor on his father's farm in Lubbock, Texas. He recalls that the experience of elemental simplicity and reading books opened up the metaphysical universe for him.
In 1972, he formed The Flatlanders together with his old high school friends. Although critics were positive, the enterprise was not successful and they disbanded the following year. Hancock continued to write songs and in 1978 he founded a recording company, Rainlight Records and released his first solo album, West Texas Waltzes and Dust-Blown Tractor Tunes. He continued to bring out albums with folk tunes, first with only guitar and harmonica and subsequently with expanded use of instruments and arrangements. From the late 1990s he has reappeared with the Flatlanders, with whom he was to release a series of albums in 2004.

When you're ready for steady to go dancin', romancin' Grab your sweetheart and jump in your car Drive right on down to the bright side of town You'll be glad you don't have to drive far You'll be happy you don't have to go far Park your pickups and Cadilacs, Fords and Renaults A E A * And dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz Grandmammy, grandpappy if you plan to stay happy You better lace up your best dancin shoes Come see us, don't write us, you can stop your arthritis Just by dancin' away your blues Just by dancin' away your blues So bind up your bunions with band-aids and gauze A E A * Come dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz SOLO I met a fine banker and I'd sure like to thank him For the credit he gave me made me shout He changed my whole attitude and to show him ny gratitude I decided I'd just ask him out. Yes I thought I just might ask her out I said close up your windows, honey, lock up your vaults A E A * And dance like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz We spent the next to the last dollar in the old ice cream parlor On a milkshake and a malt and a pop Then we heard us some sounds, there was a honky tonk lounge Right Next to the ice cream shop Next door to the ice cream shop Now only two things are better than milkshakes and malts A E A * And one is dancin' like the dickens to the West Texas Waltz And the other is somethin', but really it's nothin' To speak of it's somethin' to do If you've done it before, you'll be doin' it some more Just as soon as the dancin' is through Right after the dancin' is through And if anybody asks you why, just tell it's because A E A You been dancin' like the dickens to the West Texas
... his own past with Butch. Written by John LeeHancock (The Blind Side), the meditatively paced film swims in the ambiguity of Butch’s character, and features one of Costner’s best performances.
For Gilmore, it began as part of the equally influential West Texas-based group The Flatlanders which he formed in the ‘70s with two other now legendary cats in Joe Ely and ButchHancock.
By Ron Wynn... Since that time he’s worked for many others, among them Sam Bush, Joe Ely, ButchHancock and Jimmie Dale Gilmore. But Cowan’s now moved into a different arena ... That also goes for Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock ... He’s a great person ... .
SPC announces Spring 2024 arts performances ... Pickin’ On The Plains at 12.15 p.m ... on March 28 ... on April 30 ... on May 2 ... Along with Joe Ely and ButchHancock, Gilmore’s legendary band The Flatlanders has been credited as fathers of the alt-country movement.
