Bury Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Greater Manchester (although historically in Lancashire), and around eight miles north, and slightly west, of central Manchester, is the town of Bury.
The name 'Bury' is derived from Old English, meaning 'castle' or 'stronghold' (related to common suffixes like 'borough' and 'burgh'). Traditionally, the town's name is pronounced locally as 'BURRY' (i.e. rhymes with 'curry'), although opinions on this matter appear to be divided with the 'BERRY' pronunciation being broadly accepted.
At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin. According to church records, there has been a place of worship on this site since 971 AD. The current building is 19th century, and is Grade I listed.
In 1469 Bury Castle was built. This was a moated manor house situ...

Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) - 24 February 2021
The British Sign Language (BSL) version is available here: https://youtu.be/zDK_-u-sE78 and also here: https://parliamentlive.tv/Event/Index/7f200167-8b64-4d78-be40-a56a9dc976be
Prime Minister's Question Time, also referred to as PMQs, takes place every Wednesday that the House of Commons sits. It gives MPs the chance to put questions to the Prime Minister.
In most cases, the session starts with a routine 'open question' from an MP about the Prime Minister's engagements. MPs can then ask supplementary questions on any subject, often one of current political significance.
The Leader of the Opposition, Sir Keir Starmer, asks six questions and the leader of the second largest opposition party asks two.

What M.E.N. readers think about the Conservatives winning seats in our region
Traditional Labour heartlands such as Leigh and Heywood and Middleton turned blue last night as Boris Johnson swept to a landslide General Election victory. Elsewhere in Greater Manchester, Bolton North East, Bury North and Bury South were all won by the Conservatives in a crushing night for the Labour party. It means the Tories now have five MPs in Greater Manchester Labour lost a string of constituencies it had held for a century in its worst result since 1935. Here's what Manchester Evening News readers have been saying about election night... "Unbelievable! "Working class town of Bury and what do we go and do?! Frith battled for and saved our walk in centre after Conservative plans to get rid of it. "So we can wave goodbye to that facility now! I hope voters have enough spare ...

INTERNATIONAL: British lawmaker Christian Wakeford, who defected from the Conservatives to Labour this week, has revealed on Thursday ,January 20, the government had threatened to withhold funding for a new school in part of his constituency if he refused to vote with the government.
Christian Wakeford the Labour MP for Bury South, and has been an MP continuously since December 2019 claims of being threatened come after a senior Conservative lawmaker has accused the British government of intimidating and attempting to "blackmail" lawmakers they suspected of wanting to force Prime Minister Boris Johnson out of power.
Labour Lawmaker, Christian Wakeford says; ''I was threatened that I would not get a school for Radcliffe if I didn't vote one particular way. This is a town that's not had a high school for the best part of 10 years. And how would you feel when holding back the regeneration of a town for a vote? It didn't sit comfortably, and that was really kind of starting to question my place where I was and ultimately to where I am now.''
In response to the allegations, Prime Minister Boris has said he had "seen no evidence, heard no evidence to support any of those allegations," echoing an earlier statement from his office which said if there was evidence, the allegations would be looked at.
Wakeford has mentioned the threats, "didn't sit comfortably'' and started to make him question his position in the party before he defected to Labour.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who won a large majority in 2019, is facing growing calls to step down over a series of scandals, including admitting he had attended a party at his Downing Street office at a time when Britain was under a strict COVID-19 lockdown. UK’s premier is currently facing an investigation into the lockdown-breaking parties by Sue Gray, a civil servant.

This was a moated manor house situated above the valley of the River Irwell to the west. Its construction was ordered by Sir Thomas Pilkington, lord of the manor of Bury. Due to his allegiance to the House of York, Pilkington was forced to relinquish the castle in 1485 after Henry VII defeated Richard III at the end of the War of the Roses. The castle was transferred to the Earl of Derby, who was not resident in Bury. Consequently, it became disused, and eventually dismantled.
A wool industry existed in Bury from the medieval era. However, it was in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution that major growth occurred in the town. In 1773 Brooksbottom Mill was built, marking the beginning of the cotton industry in Bury. In 1791 construction began on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal, and was complete by 1808. This allowed for goods to be transported to the neighbouring towns, which were also flourishing at this time. By 1818 there were seven cotton mills in Bury. The canal was eventually abandoned in 1961 due to declining use.
In 1846, a rail connection was established in the town when East Lancashire Railway opened Bury station, which was later renamed to Bury Bolton Street. This provided a further boost to the town, which was already growing rapidly. The station eventually closed in 1980, although it would later reopen in 1987 as a heritage railway station stopping at nearby towns and villages including Heywood, Summerseat, Ramsbottom, Irwell Vale and Rawtenstall.
Of particular influence in the town was Robert Peel. Born in Bury into a family of wealthy textile industrialists, Peel first ran for parliament in 1809. He represented various constituencies throughout his career before becoming Prime Minister on two separate occasions. Peel is also remembered for establishing London's Metropolitan Police in 1829. In 1852, two years after his death, the statue of Robert Peel was unveiled on Market Place, where it stands to this day.
Historically, Bury has been part of Lancashire up until 1974. It was at this point that the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester was formed, to which Bury now belongs.
In 1991 construction of the Manchester Metrolink tramway began. The first phase consisted of a line between Bury and Altrincham via Manchester city centre. This was officially opened in 1992. Several additional lines have since opened across Greater Manchester.
Bury were represented in sport by Bury Football Club. Founded in 1885, they were nicknamed The Shakers, and played their home games at Gigg Lane. Sadly, in 2019 they were expelled from the Football League due to financial difficulties through gross mismanagement. Since then, a phoenix club has emerged, known as Bury A.F.C. The club is fan-owned, and their home games are played at Stainton Park through a groundshare agreement with Radcliffe F.C.
A statue of the late comedian Victoria Wood is seen shortly after the 12-minute mark. Wood was born in nearby Prestwich and raised in Bury. Other famous people from Bury include footballers Gary and Phil Neville and Kieran Trippier. The rock band Elbow was formed in Bury in 1997.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is an island country in Northwestern Europe, off the north-western coast of the continental mainland It comprises England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland, and most of the smaller islands within the British Isles. Northern Ireland shares a land border with the Republic of Ireland; otherwise, the United Kingdom is surrounded by the
Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, the English Channel, the Celtic Sea and the Irish Sea. The total area of the United Kingdom is 93,628 square miles (242,495 km2), with an estimated 2023 population of over 68 million people. The United Kingdom has evolved from a series of annexations, unions and separations of constituent countries over several hundred years. The Treaty of Union between the Kingdom of England (which also included Wales) and the Kingdom of Scotland in 1707 resulted in their unification to become the Kingdom of Great Britain. Its union in 1801 with the Kingdom of Ireland created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Most of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922, leaving the present United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which formally adopted its name in 1927.[m] The nearby Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey are not part of the UK, being Crown Dependencies, but the British government is responsible for their defence and international representation The UK became the first industrialised country and was the world's foremost power for the majority of the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly during the "Pax Britannica" between 1815 and 1914. The British Empire, at its height in the 1920s, encompassed almost a quarter of the world's landmass and population, and was the largest empire in history; however, its involvement in the First World War and the Second World War, the cumulative crisis and the loss of prestige led to the decolonization of most of the British colonies and the eventual end of the Empire. A part of the core Anglophonic world, British influence can be observed in the language, culture, legal and political systems of many of its former colonies. The UK's culture remains globally influential, particularly in literature, music and sport. The United Kingdom is a constitutional monarchy and parliamentary democracy. The capital and largest city of the United Kingdom (as well as the capital of England) is London, a megacity which, alongside New York City, is one of the world's two leading financial centres. The cities of Edinburgh, Cardiff, and Belfast are respectively the national capitals of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Other major cities include Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow, and Leeds. The UK consists of three distinct legal jurisdictions: England and Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. This is due to these areas retaining their existing legal systems even after joining the UK. Since 1998, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland also have their own devolved governments and legislatures, each with varying powers. The UK has the world's sixth-largest economy by nominal gross domestic product (GDP), and the tenth-largest by purchasing power parity. It is a recognised nuclear state and is ranked fourth globally in military expenditure. The UK has been a permanent member of the UN Security Council since its first session in 1946. It is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Council of Europe, the G7, the OECD, NATO, the Five Eyes, AUKUS and the CPTPP.

I hope voters have enough spare money to pay towards private health care as that’s exactly what we will all need." "Labour have taken Bury for granted. In Radcliffe in particular they haven't delivered on any previous election promises that mattered. "Talk of closures is not limited to the Conservatives. Labour councils closed both secondary schools in Radcliffe and left people without a local school for their children. "The roads under Labour saw investment in needless traffic calming while the roads themselves are a complete and utter mess. "Two issues I know people feel very strongly about. Labour being the party of the working class is outdated. "The results cannot be argued with. The traditional working classes no longer believe in Labour. "The fact that shares have spiked upwards, along with the pound, also showcases how relieved business and investors are at the news." "I genuinely feel Labour no longer represent or understand the working classes or those less fortunate. "It’s all smoke and mirrors from the sneering middle class dinner party set." "It's time for a new leader. "Too many Labour votes not voting labour simply because they don't like Corbyn. My dad's one of them, and yet he still can't give me a valid reason he dislikes Corbyn really. "He says every time 'I just can't stand the bloke, Mark'. Time for a change." "Can't believe people voted them in Bury after trying to get rid of the walk-in centre and several hospital wards. Embarrassment this town." "Watch the Tories finish off your town. "Those who voted for them hope you have plenty of money for healthcare, and hope you don't lose your job and end up claiming the unfair universal credit, hope your children stay well and you don't get attacked or burgled. "Promises made won't be kept they never are and you've been conned." "Unlike the EU referendum there will be another election. Labour with its clique of Corbynistas are unelectable at the moment. "If you want to change that, join the party and you will have a say in which direction the party goes." "No matter what people wanted out of this election, Brexit was a top priority.
