50 years on, the 1972 massacres still scar Burundi | AFP
In 1972, a Hutu insurrection broke out against the Tutsis leadership in Burundi, the Hutu extremists attacked and killed Tutsis living in the south of the country. What followed was a reprisal, the mass killing of between 100,000 to 300,000 Hutus by the Tutsi authorities. In December 2021 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, set up by the state, affirmed that the 1972 massacres constituted a crime of genocide and a crime against humanity. 50 years later, the pain for Burundians is still very much alive.

Dictator Michel Micombero and Burundi's Untold Painful History
For all its lushy green, mountainous beauty, the tiny African nation of Burundi has a bloodied and tragic history. 1972 in particular was a tragic year in Burundi. That year, a Hutu-led rebellion erupted in the south, killing hundreds, maybe thousands of Tutsis. The repression that ensued against the Hutus reached genocidal proportions.
This repression was carried out under the rule of the country’s dictator, Michel Micombero, a Hima Tutsi, who was in power from 1966-1976 before he was overthrown in a coup by the military.
But some of the origins of Burundi’s ethnic conflict, which occurred for over three decades following the country's independence, can be traced back to the policies of the colonizers, particularly during the time when Belgium was in control of the territory.

Kamwe Kamwe: Inside Burundi’s Killing Machine - BBC Africa Eye documentary
Former Burundian intelligence agents say that the country’s security services are running secret torture and detention sites to silence dissent. Using cutting edge reconstruction techniques BBC Africa Eye examines one house in particular, which was filmed in a video posted on social media in 2016. A red liquid, which looked like blood, was seen pouring from its gutter. We ask if Burundi’s repression of opponents has now gone underground? The government has always denied any human rights violations, and declined to comment for this report.

Former Burundian intelligence agents say that the country’s security services are running secret torture and detention sites to silence dissent. Mounting tension between Hutus and Tutsis in Burundi is threatening to plunge the small East African nation into a Rwanda-style civil war.
At least five people were reported killed after clashes broke out in the capital Bujumbura yesterday. But in the countryside, thousands have already fled for their lives as the rival ethnic groups vie for political power.
APTV has this special report .
In the squalor of this refugee camp more than 13-thousand Burundi Tutsi have found shelter from the violence which threatens to engulf this small East African nation.
With plastic sheeting provided by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (U-N-H-C-R), these Tutsis near Ngozi in northern Burundi have built shelters to ward off the cold and wet of the rainy season.
Chased from their small homesteads in the hills, the Tutsis survive on international food aid.
As in Rwanda, the Tutsis are the minority. But in Burundi they have long dominated the government and the army. That grip on power was broken when a Hutu president was elected in the country's first democratic elections.
But in October 1993, President Melchior Ndadaye was assassinated during an attempted coup by Tutsi soldiers. Enraged Hutus went on a killing spree, triggering retaliation by Tutsis and the army. Sporadic clashes have occurred ever since.
In the hills the charred ruins of small homesteads can be seen from the road.
The small village of Muhanga was once a thriving community of both Hutus and Tutsis.
Now the ruins stands as testimony to the orgy of violence that has split the country and now threatens to escalate.
It's only in the squalid refugee camps that the Tutsis feel some sort of security from the Hutus.
