The Burundian Civil War was an armed conflict lasting from 1993 to 2005. The civil war was the result of long standing ethnic divisions between the Hutu and the Tutsi ethnic groups in Burundi. The conflict began following the first multi-party elections in the country since independence from Belgium in 1962, and is seen as formally ending with the swearing in of Pierre Nkurunziza in August 2005. The estimated death toll stands at 300,000 killed.
Background
Prior to colonialism, Burundi was led by a Tutsi monarchy like its neighbor Rwanda. The Belgians and the Germans found it convenient to rule through the existing power structure in which the Tutsi were already dominant over the Hutu. They therefore perpetuated Tutsi domination. The Belgians generally identified the peoples of Burundi and Rwanda with the following observations: the Twa who were short, the Hutu who were of medium height and the Tutsi who were tallest among them. Those individuals who owned more than ten cows were normally described as Tutsi.
The Chilean Civil War of 1891, also known as Revolution of 1891 was an armed conflict between forces supporting Congress and forces supporting the sitting President, José Manuel Balmaceda. The war saw a confrontation between the Chilean Army and the Chilean Navy, which had sided with the president and the congress, respectively. This conflict ended with the defeat of the Chilean Army and the presidential forces and President Balmaceda committing suicide as a consequence. In Chilean historiography the war marks the end of the Liberal Republic and the beginning of the Parliamentary Era.
Causes
The Chilean civil war grew out of political disagreements between the president of Chile, José Manuel Balmaceda, and the Chilean congress. In 1889, the congress became distinctly hostile to the administration of President Balmaceda, and the political situation became serious, at times threatened to involve the country in civil war. According to usage and custom in Chile at the time, a minister could not remain in office unless supported by a majority in the chambers. Balmaceda found himself in the difficult position of being unable to appoint any ministers that could control a majority in the senate and chamber of deputies and at the same time be in accordance with his own views of the administration of public affairs. At this juncture, the president assumed that the constitution gave him the power of nominating and maintaining in office any ministers of his choice and that congress had no power to interfere.
The 1958 Lebanon crisis was a Lebanese political crisis caused by political and religious tensions in the country that included a U.S. military intervention. The intervention lasted around three months until President Camille Chamoun, who had requested the assistance, completed his term as president of Lebanon. American and Lebanese government forces successfully occupied the port and international airport of Beirut. The crisis over, the United States withdrew shortly after.
Background
In July 1958, Lebanon was threatened by a civil war between Maronite Christians and Muslims. Tensions with Egypt had escalated earlier in 1956 when pro-western PresidentCamille Chamoun, a Christian, did not break diplomatic relations with the Western powers that attacked Egypt during the Suez Crisis, angering Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser. These tensions were further increased when Chamoun showed closeness to the Baghdad Pact. Nasser felt that the pro-western Baghdad Pact posed a threat to Arab nationalism. As a response, Egypt and Syria united into the United Arab Republic (UAR). Lebanese SunniPrime MinisterRashid Karami supported Nasser in 1956 and 1958. Karami formed a national reconciliation government after the 1958 crisis ended.

Burundi struggling to emerge from past civil war
The crisis in Burundi was sparked by the decision in April by President Pierre Nkurunziza to bid for a third term. Opposition supporters called the move unconstitutional.
A coup attempt in May was crushed after two days; many of the soldiers and police who took part fled the country.
Resisting pressure from protesters and foreign governments to step down, 51-year-old Nkurunziza went on to win 70% of the vote in July's disputed election.

Burundi is witnessing its worst political crisis since the end of the Civil War in 2006. While the Burundi government says the situation is under control, there are fears that the country, which has already experienced two Civil Wars in the last 50 years, will slip into violence once again.
Many in Burundi, as well as the African Union, are worried that the country could slip into civil war again.
Al Jazeera spoke to one man, who did not wish to reveal his identity, about his fears for the country.

Executive editor and founder of Black Agenda Report discusses the latest in the apparent civil war in Burundi describing much of the problem as originating in Western/outside influences.
U.N. Secretary-General Ban ki-Moon has called for urgent talks to avert civil war in Burundi. In the worst clashes since a military coup was foiled in May, insurgents attacked military camps in the capital Bujumbura on Friday and nearly 90 people were killed in the ensuing violence. VOA’s Vincent Makori reports.

Former Burundian intelligence agents say that the country’s security services are running secret torture and detention sites to silence dissent. Using cutting edge reconstruction techniques #BBCAfricaEye examines one house in particular, which was filmed in a video posted on social media in 2016. A red liquid, which looked like blood, was seen pouring from its gutter.
We ask: has Burundi’s repression of opponents now gone underground? The government has always denied any human rights violations, and declined to comment for this report.

The United Nations has warned the tiny East African country could be sliding back toward civil war.It says up to 200 people may have been killed last Friday in the capital Bujumbura. And that the UN has documented almost 60 extrajudicial killings in the past month alone.
