Burlington Northern Railroad
When the Burlington Northern Railroad was formed on March 2nd, 1970, the entire railroad industry in the US was in total disarray. Using unproven innovations and advantages handed down from its ancestors, how would the country's largest railroad bridge the gap between the 19th and 21st centuries?

Burlington Northern Locomotives
The Burlington Northern was a freight railroad created on March 2nd, 1970 with the merger of the Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago, Burlington and Quincy, and Spokane Portland and Seattle Railroads. For the 50th anniversary of the creation of the Burlington Northern, I thought it would be appropriate to go back and look at some BN locomotives I’ve captured in more recent years on BNSF freight trains. We will see locomotives painted in both the classic Cascade Green and Black scheme as well as the more recent BN “Executive” or “Grinstein” scheme of the 1990s. Additionally, we’ll see a beautifully restored Burlington Northern SD9, number 6234, running on the Minnesota Transportation Museum’s Osceola and St. Croix Railway.

Burlington Northern
Verse 1
Big orange comin' down the railroad line, sometimes green with a little bit of white
Through Fullerton into L.A., used to be known as the Santa Fe
Big Diesel and its thundering roar, tearin' down the long dark corridor
Headlights railroad traffic signs, Burlington Northern's right on time
CHORUS
A singin'
Burlington, Burlington, Burlington, Burlington
Verse 2
In the Barstow yard at the crack of dawn, train pulls out for the Long Beach port
Through Cajon Pass and the desert floor, by the banks of Coal Creek Reservoir
Always on the move that's BNSF, travels so fast you'll lose your breath
Straight shot down the Alameda Line, Burlington Northern's right on time - (To Chorus)
Verse 3
There's more to this railroad than meets the eye, truck like intermodal transit times
28 states adding more, trains loaded down with iron ore
30,000 miles of rails and ties, East and West of the great divide
All through the day, into the night, Burlington Northern's right on time.
Final Chorus
A singin': Burlington
Burlington (Down the railroad line)
Burlington (Through the great divide)
Burlington (Burlington Northern's right on time!)

The Altar Billies are a trio from Orange County California fronted by guitarist/vocalist Michael W Stand. Rounding out the group are Johnny X on upright and Chuck Cummings on Drums. The group covers many classics hits, as well as newly penned originals.
For over 13 years the fellas have been featured at such venues as the Orange County Fair, Tustin Street Fair, Orange Street Fair, Fullerton Farmer’s Market, Silverado Canyon Concert Series, are regulars at the Downtown Santa Ana Farmer’s Market and of course a number of times at NAMM. They have also appeared at many clubs in the OC area – including the "old" Anaheim House of Blues, The Coach House and The Observatory.
In late 2010, the group released its self-titled CD “The Altar Billies.” This release was soon followed by other singles including: “Hold on,” “You Found me,” and their rockabilly version of the Christmas classic: “Joy to the World.” In 2013 the group released their most successful single and video to date: “I’m Still Stand’n.” .
Not to be complacent with the success of “I’m Still Stand’n,” Michael W penned a new song in the summer of 2013 titled “Ballad of the Big Boy” (Titans of the Wasatch). This tune paid homage to the biggest steam engine in the world (owned and operated by Union Pacific Railroad).
In 2014 the group released its first full-length 15-song project titled "Head'n out West." This musical venture featured not only “I’m Still Stand’n,” and “Ballad of the Big Boy,” but found its swing with songs such as “Aim’n High” and “You Can’t look up, When You’re Look’n Down.” 2017 found the fellas hitting the trail once again with their latest release: “Long, Long Road.”
From 2018 through 2021 the group released a myriad of singles including: “The Ballad of Ol’ Luce,” “Virginia Truckee Line,” “Great Big Rollin Big Boy,” and many others. In 2022 the group released its third full length recording project titled: “All In.”
The Altar Billies are proud to carry the rockabilly torch and keep this musical heritage alive. They are 3 swell guys that work hard, play together really well, have a good time in the process and love trains!

See the historic 1970 formation of Burlington Northern. See great vintage trains of Great Northern, Northern Pacific, Chicago Burlington & Quincy and the Spokane Portland & Seattle from the 50s into the 70s. We bring the history of the “James Hill Lines” and how he reshaped the northwest. See the steam to early diesel transition of these lines.
Follow the career of Chicago Burlington & Quincy’s, Ralph Budd. His early years as a design engineer made him one of the industry’s greatest innovators. He was the youngest railroad president when earlier he took charge of the GN as he was also a sharp businessman.
Follow the early passenger Ralph Budd-inspired Zephyrs, the California Zephyr plus passenger and freight trains of the CB&Q, GN and NP. Visit Chicago, Iowa, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington and more locations with passenger and freight. We offer a special section of the “Inside Gateway” line jointly operated by the BN & WP.
To quote Model Railroad News, “The story is epic... plan to watch it several times...”.

This is: Burlington Northern Minnesota Ore Lines.
Burlington Northern Railroad action is seen traveling over the former Great Northern Railway's Minnesota ore lines throughout the famous Mesabi Iron Range. See the BN as they load ore cars with taconite pellets at the Keewatin and Hibbing taconite plants. The long and heavy ore trains then travel over 100 miles through scenic Minnesota forests to reach BN's shipping port on the shores of Lake Superior at Allouez, Wisconsin. See the ship Mesabi Miner, a huge 1,000 foot ore boat that’s arriving at the Superior Entry for loading at BN Dock 5. Also included is a tribute to both the Great Northern Railway and the legendary freighter, Edmund Fitzgerald. Classic BN diesel power includes: GP9, GP10, SD9, SD40-2 and SD60M. Most BN ore trains and the Kelly Lake locals even operate with a caboose! A few trains of the DM&IR, DWP & WC are also seen. Footage era early 1990’s from the camera of Bradley A. Plets.
