Bryanston, Gauteng is an upper class and wealthy residential suburb of Johannesburg, South Africa. First named as an area in 1949, it was established in 1969 as a suburb of Sandton and provided with tarred roads and municipal services , but after municipal boundaries were revised following the end of Apartheid, Sandton was merged with Johannesburg to form part of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The multi-lane N1Western Johannesburg Bypass freeway forms its northern boundary with access at William Nicol offramp. It is located in Region E.
Bryanston is bifurcated by Bryanston Drive, running from the outskirts of Randburg to the beginning of Morningside.
It has a fairly new corporate area called The Campus running along the two main roads, William Nicol and Main Road. Many large corporations are based in Bryanston, such as Dimension Data (DiData), which runs a large corporate campus (The Campus), GlaxoSmithKline and Google.com, which are also based at The Campus, Microsoft Corporation, Ogilvy & Mather, Tiger Brands, and Synovate. The long-established Bryanston Country Club, founded in 1948 is in the heart of Bryanston.
Families with school aged children compose a large part of the Bryanston community due to the excellent private school system that is ranked as best in Gauteng.
The village was named after Brian de Lisle, a Baron at the court of King John. The Rogers family owned it for a long period of time, and it was later purchased by Sir William Portman, 6th Baronet, who took part in crushing Monmouth's rebellion in 1685. In the 1890s the Portman family built a large country house, designed by Richard Norman Shaw and set in 400 acres (160ha). Since 1927 the building has been the home of Bryanston School. In 1950 Viscount Portman gave up the Bryanston Estates as part payment of death duties. The estate was then owned by the crown until 2015 when the estate was purchased by a UK company held on behalf of the Viscount Rothermere and his son the Hon Vere Harmsworth for an undisclosed sum.
Gauteng (/xaʊˈtɛŋ/; Sotho pronunciation[xɑ́.ú.ˈtʼè.ŋ̀]) which means "gold" is one of the nine provinces of South Africa. It was formed from part of the old Transvaal Province after South Africa's first all-race elections on 27 April 1994. It was initially named Pretoria–Witwatersrand–Vereeniging (PWV) and was renamed "Gauteng" in December 1994.
Situated in the Highveld, Gauteng is the smallest province in South Africa, accounting for only 1.5% of the land area. Nevertheless, it is highly urbanised, containing the country's largest city, Johannesburg, its administrative capital, Pretoria, and other large industrial areas such as Midrand and Vanderbijlpark. As of 2015, it has a population of nearly 13.2million, making it the most populous province in South Africa.
Etymology
The name Gauteng is derived from the Sotho name, "gauta" meaning "gold" with [locative suffix "-eng"]. This is due to the thriving gold industry in the province following the 1886 discovery of gold in Johannesburg. In Sesotho the name "Gauteng" was used for Johannesburg and surrounding areas long before it was adopted in 1994 as the official name of a province.
Gauteng cricket team (formerly Transvaal cricket team) is the first-class cricket team of the province of Gauteng (previously Transvaal; Gauteng was called Transvaal from April 1890 to April 1997) in South Africa. Under the main competition's various names – the Currie Cup, then the Castle Cup, now the SuperSport Series– Transvaal/Gauteng cricket team has been the most successful of the South African domestic sides, winning 25 times. The club's most glorious period was the 1980s when they were dubbed the "Mean Machine".
