Brown College at Monroe Hill is one of three residential colleges at the University of Virginia. Originally named Monroe Hill College, Brown opened in 1986 as the first modern residential college at the University of Virginia. It was renamed Brown College at Monroe Hill in recognition of the endowment donated by the Brown family (of the Brown-Forman Corporation) in 1994. The college is led by Dr. Melissa Thomas-Hunt, principal, and Dr. Stephen Plaskon, Director of Studies. About fifty faculty fellows from many departments and schools of the university maintain close ties to the college.
The compound that conforms the college is principally made of the following buildings known as portals: Davis, Smith, Mallet, Long, Venable, Gildersleeve, McGuffey, Harrison, Tucker, Holmes, Rogers and Peters. Each portal houses approximately 24 students and all twelve are connected by underground passages frequently referred to as tunnels.
Membership
Brown College's population is made of undergraduate students. The acceptance process into Brown College is competitive requiring completion of a formal application which includes several out-of-the-ordinary essay questions, such as "You have taken yourself hostage. Write a list of your demands." and "You are a 7-year-old child with the diction and lexicon of a 35-year-old college professor, but an emotional depth befitting your age. Have a temper tantrum." Applicants are also given a blank page and instructed to use it as they see fit.
The residential colleges of Rice University comprise eleven separate residential colleges which function as the primary housing, dining, and social organization for undergraduate students. The system was established in 1957 and was inspired by the residential college systems at the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge as well as the American adaptations of the same at Harvard and Yale. Each student is randomly affiliated with a residential college upon matriculation and becomes a lifetime member of the college. The residential college system takes the place of a greek system, and has contributed to a sense of community that other universities have sought to emulate.
At academic ceremonies, including Matriculation and Commencement, the colleges process in the following order: the four original colleges in the order Baker, Will Rice, Hanszen, and Wiess, followed by the other colleges in order of founding: Jones, Brown, Lovett, Sid Richardson, Martel, McMurtry, and Duncan. For the original four colleges, which became colleges at the same time in 1957, the processional order reflects the order in which the original buildings were constructed. For McMurtry and Duncan, which were built at the same time and opened simultaneously in August 2009, the processional order reflects the order in which the founding gifts were made.
Sanford-Brown College, with campuses located in Mendota Heights and Brooklyn Center, Minnesota, United States, was formed when Brown College merged with Sanford–Brown in March 2014, to form Sanford-Brown College. It is a for-profit school and is a subsidiary of Career Education Corporation. The College offered programs in the areas of Broadcasting, Game Design, Visual Communications, Network, Business Management, Medical Assisting, and Criminal Justice. The school ran on 5 week modules continuously throughout the year, with week breaks in July and December.
In May 2015 Career Education Corporation announced the closure of all remaining Sanford–Brown schools.
History
The school was originally established in 1946 as the American Institute of the Air by Richard and Helen Brown. The college originally occupied a seven-building campus on East Lake Street in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The initial campus was made up of old business buildings that were remodeled and refurbished. In 1954, the school changed its name to Brown Institute and then in 2001, it became Brown College. Richard and Helen retired in 1978 but were active participants in Brown events until their deaths in 1994.
In July 1986, due to enrollment increases and the lack of space that resulted, the school moved to a brand new facility on Lake Street and Hiawatha Avenue in Minneapolis. In 1997, it relocated again to a Mendota Heights, again due to space needs. Brown College further expanded in October 2001 when it opened its Brooklyn Center, a second campus in a suburb of the northwestern Twin Cities.

MONROE HILL | a film by Eduardo Montes-Bradley
MONROE HILL offers an unprecedented overview of James Monroe’s first farm in Albemarle County, cradle of the University of Virginia.
Presenting interviews with experts and academics such as Dan Preston, founder and curator of The Papers of James Monroe, the documentary unearths the history of a space that contains the last remaining structures of the late 18th century plantation that serve as a silent witness to Monroe’s struggle as a farmer and a politician, at home and abroad.
With the assistance of student residents from Brown College and painstaking research from the filmmaker, and featuring previously unseen and neglected footage, the film brings to light a significant period for the future President of the United States and of the nation itself.

MONROE HILL is a rich examination of a space frozen in time, an archeologically challenging experience that explores a place as well as the people that helped to transform it, and challenges the idea of a mythical birthplace of the University of Virginia.
