The brown booby (Sula leucogaster) is a large seabird of the booby family, Sulidae. They present sexual dimorphism. The female booby reaches about 80 centimetres (31in) in length, its wingspan measures up to 150cm (4.9ft), and they can weigh up to 1,300g (2.9lb). The male booby reaches about 75 centimetres (30in) in length, its wingspan measures up to 140cm (4.6ft), and they can weigh up to 1,000g (2.2lb).
The booby's head and upper body (back) is covered in dark brown or black, with the remainder (belly) being a contrasting white. The juvenile form is gray-brown with darkening on the head, wings and tail. While these birds are typically silent, bird watchers have reported occasional sounds similar to grunting or quacking. Their beaks are quite sharp and contain many jagged edges. They have short wings and long, tapered tails.
This species breeds on islands and coasts in the pantropical areas of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. They frequent the breeding grounds of the islands in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. This bird nests in large colonies, laying two chalky blue eggs on the ground in a mound of broken shells and vegetation. It winters at sea over a wider area.

Brown Booby - Onalaska, WI - August 10, 2022
A Brown Booby was first spotted on the Black River on August 9, 2022 and was spotted once again on August 11, 2022. I observed this bird from approximately 7pm until 8:15pm.
The bird was located on the river until a boater came too close to the bird and it then flew to a tree located on the west side of the river and stayed there until dusk. (I assume it will roost there for the night.) This was observed from the Eagle Watch overlook located just south of exit 3, I-90 in Onalaska, WI looking west across the Black River.
Special thanks to local birder Tim Collins for locating this bird on August 9, 2022 and Dan Jackson for alerting local birders. There were many local birders there on the evening of August 10, 2022 (including myself) as witnesses to this very rare bird and I believe a fi...
