Emily Brontë - The Strange One - Biographical Documentary
Emily Brontë is the least well known of the Brontë sisters. She died at the age of 30, having published one major work – Wuthering Heights - a strange, rambling gothic masterpiece that puzzled and dismayed critics at the time, who were troubled by its moral ambiguity.
Like her novel, Emily was also regarded as strange - solitary, uncompromising, uninterested in small talk or social conventions and either painfully shy or bluntly antisocial.
In this video I draw upon my 30 years' experience in psychiatry to explore the life and inner world of Emily Brontë trying to work out whether her strangeness was just the eccentricity of creative genius or something else – an autistic spectrum disorder perhaps.

Charlotte, Anne & Emily Bronte - Walking in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters
Emily Bronte, Anne Bronte, and Charlotte Bronte lived 180 years ago. We visit Bronte Country and walk in the footsteps of the Bronte Sisters, piecing together their tragic short lives as we visit places they lived or frequented.
The Brontes wrote some of the most dramatic fiction right here in West Yorkshire and many of the places still exist. On our walk, we will head to where it all started at the Bronte's birthplace in Thornton. Visit the school that Charlotte Bronte immortalised as Lowood School in Jane Eyre. See Oakwell Hall which she based Fieldhead on in Shirley. Walk the wild Haworth Moors to Top Withens where Emily Bronte found inspiration for Wuthering Heights, and a whole lot more.

Wuthering Heights: Emily Brontë’s Misunderstood Masterpiece | SLICE WHO | FULL DOCUMENTARY
In 1847, under the male pseudonym Ellis Bell, Emily Brontë published her only novel, "Wuthering Heights," a timeless classic that continues to captivate readers more than 150 years later. This tale of doomed love between Heathcliff and Catherine not only enchants with its romantic tragedy but also serves as a sharp critique of Victorian society and its oppressive, colonizing systems.
As contemporary critics grapple with its profound themes, adaptations abound—from William Wyler’s cinematic interpretations to Kate Bush’s iconic pop single. Yet, Emily Brontë remains an enigmatic figure at the heart of "Brontë Country."
In this film, we delve deep into the life of this mysterious author, using rare archival materials and expert insights to unravel the origins of her groundbreaking work. Wit...

Women Ahead Of Their Time: The Brilliant Bronte Sisters (Full Documentary)
Actress and writer Sheila Hancock has long been fascinated by the life and works of the Brontë sisters. In this programme, she searches for an answer to a puzzling question: “How did three spinsters who spent most of their lives in a remote parsonage on the edge of the moors come to write books so shocking, erotic, profoundly moving and quite wonderful?”
Sheila embarks on a journey that starts in the Yorkshire village of Haworth and the brutal moors that inspired Emily Brontë’sWuthering Heights, moves on to Brussels, where Charlotte Brontë developed the writing style that made Jane Eyre an enduring masterpiece, and ends in Scarborough, the last resting place of Anne Brontë.
Over the course of documentary, Sheila meets leading authorities on the Brontës as well as modern artists who have ...

Emily Bronte - full documentary
What inspired 'Wuthering Heights'? In 'Search of Emily Bronte' - a film I made 20 years ago with former Culture Secretary, Chris Smith on a journey across the Yorkshire Moors to Haworth. With the help of authors Lucasta Miller and Stevie Davies, Chris finds the romantic myth of Emily as 'The Mystic of the Moors' hides a more complex and fascinating truth.
I was so lucky that the hugely talented Sarah Class agreed to write the music. Her beautiful and sensitive score enhanced our modestly budgeted film immeasurably. I'm delighted that Sarah's genius has just reached a worldwide audience after His Majesty, King Charles III, asked her to write a specially commissioned piece of music for his coronation. It was a triumph. You can enjoy more of her music here: https://www.youtube.com/@Sar...

Now your bowl is empty
And your feet are cold
And your body cannot stop rocking
I know
It hurts to let go
Since the day we found you
You have been our friend
And your voice still
Echoes in the hallway of this house
But now
It's the end
We will be with you
When you're leaving
We will be with you
When you go
We will be with you
And hold you till you're quiet
It hurts to let you go
We will be with you

Discovering more for yourself
There is a huge amount of information on the Brontës but less on the elusive Emily. Many of the biographies about her are out of print, but Romer Wilson’s Life and Private History of Emily is well worth a read. I really enjoyed the recent fictionalised biopic Emily and the rather more authentic To Walk Invisible. All are available through my Amazon Store. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professorgraemeyorston

With stunning visuals of the Yorkshire moors and captivating animated sequences, we explore the dark imagination that birthed "Wuthering Heights" and solidified Emily Brontë's legacy in literature.

Over the course of documentary, Sheila meets leading authorities on the Brontës as well as modern artists who have been inspired by their work. Delving through priceless artefacts and manuscripts, Sheila sheds new light on these remarkable and world-famous women: has she finally found the elusive answer to her question?

You can enjoy more of her music here: https://www.youtube.com/@SarahClassMusic
You may also recognise the voice of Hugh Bonneville as Mr Lockwood, in his pre 'Downton Abbey' Days!
