Emily Brontë - The Strange One - Biographical Documentary
Emily Brontë is the least well known of the Brontë sisters. She died at the age of 30, having published one major work – Wuthering Heights - a strange, rambling gothic masterpiece that puzzled and dismayed critics at the time, who were troubled by its moral ambiguity.
Like her novel, Emily was also regarded as strange - solitary, uncompromising, uninterested in small talk or social conventions and either painfully shy or bluntly antisocial.
In this video I draw upon my 30 years' experience in psychiatry to explore the life and inner world of Emily Brontë trying to work out whether her strangeness was just the eccentricity of creative genius or something else – an autistic spectrum disorder perhaps.

What inspired 'Wuthering Heights'? In 'Search of Emily Bronte' - a film I made 20 years ago with former Culture Secretary, Chris Smith on a journey across the Yorkshire Moors to Haworth. With the help of authors Lucasta Miller and Stevie Davies, Chris finds the romantic myth of Emily as 'The Mystic of the Moors' hides a more complex and fascinating truth.
I was so lucky that the hugely talented Sarah Class agreed to write the music. Her beautiful and sensitive score enhanced our modestly budgeted film immeasurably. I'm delighted that Sarah's genius has just reached a worldwide audience after His Majesty, King Charles III, asked her to write a specially commissioned piece of music for his coronation. David Austin Rose Review - Emily Bronte
I think this is the case where everyone's environment, growing conditions and other factors can highly affect how your rose grows and how your rose performs. David Austin has Emily Bronte as one of their best for health as well as their best for fragrance. While I would agree that she is very healthy, I do not agree that she is one of the most fragrant. I have many more roses in my garden, and many other David Austin roses in my garden that I would list as more fragrant. That does not mean that I don't love having her in my garden.....not at all. She is covered in flowers, and the color is stunning. She is very healthy, has long stems which are great for cutting, and best of all she is healthy. I true joy in the rose garden!

Discovering more for yourself
There is a huge amount of information on the Brontës but less on the elusive Emily. Many of the biographies about her are out of print, but Romer Wilson’s Life and Private History of Emily is well worth a read. I really enjoyed the recent fictionalised biopic Emily and the rather more authentic To Walk Invisible. All are available through my Amazon Store. https://www.amazon.com/shop/professorgraemeyorston

It was a triumph. You can enjoy more of her music here: https://www.youtube.com/@SarahClassMusic

The best way to plant this rose is to purchase soil specifically for Roses. You can use the entire bag to fill up a container or amend your current ground soil with this. This is the product that I used:

While planting, it's a good idea to add some fertilizer for these plants to munch on because they have a lot of work to do. If you are planting a bare root rose then they have to first set new roots and then new leaves and flowers. Growing those beautiful roses is a lot of work and these plants are big feeders! You will also need to feed them every 14-21 days during the growing season. Feed your plants with this (Espoma Rose Fertilizer):

Do you have Aphids? This is my go-to spray for not only aphids but also Japanese Bettles, White Flies, Spider Mites, and other bugs that won't leave my beautiful roses alone!
https://amzn.to/3MT4nsO
A bare root rose will need to be soaked in water for a minimum of 2 hours, but it's best to let them soak for 5-6 6 before putting them into the ground.
When you plant a rose, plant it deep. Put the crown of the plant below the soil grade. It's always a good idea to have some mulch too because they like moist soil.
And, last but not least you will want to have some spray on hand that can kill bugs, aphids, white flys, etc. This Organic spray has Neem oil which you will want to spray every few weeks. This will also help with black spot and powder mildew. If you have ever grown a rose you know these take a bit of work, but are well worth all the love. This is my go-to rose spray:

Emily Bronte:
- 4ft tall by 3.5ft wide.
- 106 petals.
- Medium Leaves and dark green.
- Flowers are 3.5 inches or medium size.
- Cream white with apricot, peach and soift pink.

Tony Robinson is exploring the West Yorkshire Moors, known as Bronte country, to discover the inspiration behind the works of the legendary Bronte sisters. Charlotte, Emily, and Anne Bronte were born into a world of mills and moors in the early 19th century in Yorkshire. The writing prowess in the Bronte family produced timeless literary classics like "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights". Their lives, remarkable storytelling, and tragic early deaths have left a lasting imprint on the psyche of West Yorkshire.
