Bristol City Football Club is a football club in Bristol, England. Their ground is Ashton Gate, located in the southwest of the city. They currently play in the Championship after winning League One during the 2014–15 season. In sealing the League One title, Bristol City became only the second team to win both the third-tier championship and Football League Trophy double during the same season.
Bristol City won the Welsh Cup– despite being an English club– in 1934. In 1907 they finished runners-up in Football League Division One, which is their highest ever final position. In 1909 they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester United, their only final. Since relegation in 1911, however, they only returned to the top division from 1976 to 1980 and did not contend for any honours then. In 1982, Bristol City became the first English club to suffer three consecutive relegations. They were promoted to the Football League Championship in the 2006–07 season after finishing second in League One but failed to make a second consecutive promotion to the Premier League after they were defeated by Hull City in the 2008 Football League Championship play-off Final at Wembley Stadium. With victories in 1986, 2003 and 2015, Bristol City are now the most successful team in the Football League Trophy.
The Bristol City was the third of three British cargo steamers of that name built for the Bristol City Line that plyed the route between Bristol and North America. The ship was sunk by a torpedo fired by German submarine U-358 while travelling as part of a convoy in the North Atlantic in 1943.
Construction
The Bristol City was built by Charles Hill & Sons Ltd. of Bristol in 1920. It was of 2864 grt, made of steel, and had one 3 cylinder triple expansion engine with a single shaft and one screw. It made 10 knots.
Career
The ship would have plyed the service between Bristol and North America which the Bristol City Line started in 1879 and continued until the 1970s. During the Second World War she was damaged by a bomb in December 1940 while in the Albion Dockyard. After repairs, the ship sailed under Captain Webb OBE and she was part of convoys of merchant ships across the Atlantic.
Sinking
In April 1943, Bristol City joined Convoy ONS 5 (outward, northbound, slow) from Britain to North America. The convoy was made up of 42 ships, of which 12 or 13 were sunk after the convoy came under sustained attack from German submarines hunting in packs. On 5 May at 02.25, the Bristol City was south of Greenland and east of Newfoundland when it was sunk by a torpedo fired by submarine U-358, under the command of Rolf Manke. Fifteen of the 44 people on board died. Manke fatally damaged the Wentworth not long after. HMS Loosestrife picked up the survivors from both ships who were landed at St Johns in Newfoundland.
Bristol was a large sidewheel steamer launched in 1866 by William H. Webb of New York for the Merchants Steamship Company. One of Narragansett Bay's so-called "floating palaces", the luxuriously outfitted Bristol and her sister ship Providence, each of which could carry up to 1,200 passengers, were installed with the largest engines then built in the United States, and were considered to be amongst the finest American-built vessels of their era.
Both ships would spend their entire careers steaming between New York and various destinations in and around Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island. Bristol was eventually destroyed by a fire while in port in 1888.
Development
Bristol and Providence owed their existence to a short-lived company known as the Merchants Steamship Company, which placed the initial order for the vessels with the Webb shipyard in about 1865. Merchants Steamship was an amalgamation of three existing Narragansett Bay shipping lines, the Commercial Line, Neptune Line and Stonington Line. The Company intended to run the two steamers between New York and Bristol, Rhode Island in competition with the Fall River Line, which ran a similar service from New York to Fall River, Massachusetts (both Lines then linking up to railway lines that continued on to Boston).
Once territory of the Wawenock (or Walinakiak, meaning "People of the Bay") AbenakiIndians, early Bristol was one of the most important and embattled frontier settlements in the province. Beginning with seasonal fishing, as early as 1625 the English established at Pemaquid Point a year-round trading post for fur trading. In 1631, the area was granted as the Pemaquid Patent by the Plymouth Council to Robert Aldsworth and Gyles Elbridge, merchants from Bristol, England.
Bristol is a borough in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, 23 miles (37km) northeast of Center CityPhiladelphia, opposite Burlington, New Jersey on the Delaware River. Bristol was first incorporated in 1720. Although its charter was revised in 1905, the original charter remains in effect, making Bristol one of the older boroughs in Pennsylvania. 7,104 people lived in Bristol in 1900; 9,256 in 1910; 10,273 in 1920; and 11,895 in 1940. The population was 9,726 at the 2010 census. The current Mayor is Patrick Sabatini Sr.
The first female Mayor was Margaret Stakenas, elected in 1979.
History
Bristol was first settled in 1681 as Buckingham (for Buckingham, England). It was originally used as a port and dock. Bristol is rich in history, boasting many historic and restored houses that line the streets of Radcliffe and Mill.
Until 1725 Bristol served as county seat of Bucks County.
From its earliest days Bristol was a center of milling. With the building of the Delaware Canal and the Pennsylvania Railroad it became a center of transportation and an attractive location for industry.
City rounded off their pre-season with an energetic display against Aston Villa as they welcomed the return of supporters to Ashton Gate.
A total of 7,589 fans turned out to watch the Robins in action for the first time since March 2020, though it was an unfortunate scoreline on the day.
Jaden Bidace opened the scoring, before Ezri Kona capitalised on a mistake just before half-time.
City came out and pushed their opponents all the way in the second half and even had a handful of penalty appeals dismissed, before Ollie Watkins nodded in a third goal.

We emerge to follow Broad Street and pass Edward Everard's Printing Works with it's amazing tiled frontage and the Palestine Museum before heading back through the arch beneath St Johns.
We follow Christmas Street to cross Colston Avenue to ascend the famous Christmas Steps. Passing the board game cafe 'Chance & Counters,' the barbers 'Harry Blades & Angry Daves', the '20th Century Flicks' video shop, 'That' art gallery and many more independent traders, we arrive on Colston Street.
We pause to view Foster's Almshouses dating back to the 15th Century before taking Trenchard Street to Colston Hall - Bristol's largest concert hall. Continuing on, we find The Olde Hatchet Inn dating from 1606. Just beyond here, we find more street art including Big Deal Kids by JPS and an amazing piece of pop art by the collaboration of Richt and 45RPM.
And just around the corner, as we mount the steps to Park Street is
Banksy's Hanging Man (or Well Hung Lover as it's sometimes known as.)
We complete our walk with Bristol City Council on our right as we cross College Green to view Bristol Cathedral.

Highlights from the Robins High Performance Centre as Andreas Weimann, Kasey Palmer and Chris Martin all hit the target in an extended six-goal encounter against Portsmouth.
Nigel Pearson’s side had to come from two goals behind at the end of 45 minutes, before Weimann’s low drive and Palmer’s pick of the bunch drew the hosts level at the Robins High Performance Centre.
Martin was awarded a penalty, of which he dispatched himself, to put City ahead by the end of 90 minutes but an extra half an hour was to be played as planned, in which Portsmouth pounced to earn the draw.
City’s young forward Marlee Francois was allowed to play for Portsmouth in the extra 30 minutes with Pompey lacking in numbers, and in a turn of events he ended up being the player to poach the equaliser.

"As close to being there, without being there."
If you're wondering what to do in one day in Bristol, follow this walking tour of the City Centre. We start on Quay Street, opposite St John's church, surrounded by iconic street art - El Mac's 'Clothed with the Sun,' Nick Walker's 'Tipping Red Paint,' 'Welcome To Bristol' by Tats Cru and Aryz's 'Wolf.
Through the arch into Broad Street we're greeted by Conor Harrington's The Duel of Bristol. Turning along Bell Lane we cross to explore Leonard Lane, often known as Graffiti Alley because it's walls are completely covered in spray art.
Bristol UK has to be on your Britain top 10 list.
We emerge into the relative grandeur of Corn Street. Among bars and restaurants we find an open air market and Exchange Avenue leading to the covered food market known as St Nicholas Market.
