The civil parish of Brierley contains the large pit village of Grimethorpe, and at the 2001 census had a population of 5,973.
Brierley lies approximately 330 feet (100m) above sea level.
History
Brierley was an early Saxon settlement. The fort at Brierley Gap, mistakenly called Saxon, is from a much earlier period - probably the Iron Age. The village grew first around the hill top on the Barnsley to Pontefract road where a small hollow and the sites of several wells provided a good building area. Along Ket Hill Lane, coal seams come to the surface and form part of the soil so coal must have been known to these early farmers. Sandstone and coal in alternate layers are the underlying rocks of the area.
Jennet Brierley and Ellen Brierley two of the twelve witches tried at Lancaster Assizes in August 1612 for their part in the Pendle Hill witchcraft case

Is there a REBIRTH of BELIEF IN GOD? Justin Brierley vs Alex O'Connor
Alex O’Connor is the founder of the popular YouTube channel Cosmic Skeptic and host of the Within Reason podcast. This dialogue explored themes from Justin Brierley’s latest book "The Surprising Rebirth of Belief in God: Why New Atheism Grew Old and Secular Thinkers Are Considering Christianity Again".
Justin Brierley has hosted discussions between atheists and Christians for seventeen years. In this event, Alex challenged Justin on a number of concerns, ranging from the validity of the data behind his “rebirth of belief in God” thesis, the possibility of a politicised and violent rise of “belief in the utility of belief in God”, and he also surprised everybody with a spontaneous poem recital!

The event was chaired by Patrick Brown of The Trinity Forum Europe. Discussion followed by Q&A.

"Mick, I have this Explorer. Basically a '58 sort of thing. It has loud pickups in it and I want them gone. Wouldn't mind some period-attentive PAF-type pickups. Can you do, please?"
And he did. Wow. A2 beauties that are full of personality and life. And I know that they'll grow up over time too. Stunners, Mick Brierley. Thank you.
We talked about names. In the end we decided to call them 491's after the last three digits of Seth Lover's patent. So, here's a little take on Mick Brierley's bloody excellent 491's. If you want some, you'll have to call/email Mick as they're not a website product yet.
