1972-73 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Bridget Loves Bernie
We continue our review of the fall 1972 television season and reminisce about the many shows that became long time hits, and those that faded away.
One in particular from that season comes to mind, and that show is Bridget Loves Bernie. It was a CBS series that was placed in 'the hammock' spot on the Saturday night lineup... between All in the Family at 8, and The Mary Tyler Moore Show as 9. How could a series in this spot, with this cast not succeed?
But the ratings just never about as expected, and the how ran for just a single season. The ratings were good, but apparently not quite what CBS was looking for in that key time slot. We'll talk more about the show and that particular 8:30pm time slot on the CBS Saturday night lineup later on in our season review come winter/spring.

Classic TV Theme: Bridget Loves Bernie
Recently we posted 'Phenom' a sitcom that ranked in the top 20 but still was cancelled after one season. 'Bridget Loves Bernie' can top that: it ranked in the top five and got the axe. Agitated response to the 'controversial' (for its time, 1972) premise of a Jewish boy marrying a Catholic girl is what killed the series. But the show had its effect on the stars: David Birney and Meredith Baxter married in real life after the show's run. (They would eventually divorce and Baxter would decide she is a lesbian, but that's another story.) The theme ('Love is Crazy') is by Jerry Fielding, who also provided the theme for another pair of on-screen lovebirds, still married in real life - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNRdyjVf3nM

Bridget Loves Bernie Cast | Good Night America (Aug 15th, 1974)
When the Bridget Loves Bernie TV series went off the air, it was more of a function of controversy than of low ratings. The controversy revolved around a central peg in the show, a mixed marriage. Bridget who supposedly came from an Irish Catholic family married Bernie who was a lower East Side Manhattan Jewish decent. Evidently that idea didn’t sit very well with some members of either group. The series was discontinued but one good thing came out of it, David Bernie met his costar Meredith Baxter. They fell in love and married in real life, and here they are to talk about their future career in television and raising kids.

David Birney, Star of Controversial Sitcom ‘Bridget Loves Bernie,’ Dies at 83
David Birney, the actor whose TV, film, and stage career spanned nearly four decades, and included turns on the star-studded medical drama St. Elsewhere and the doomed sitcom Bridget Loves Bernie, has died. Michelle Roberge, a woman who identified herself as Birney’s life partner, told The New York Times that Birney died Friday at his Santa Monica home after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was 83. The veteran actor shot to mainstream attention in 1972, after being cast as Bernie, a Jewish taxi driver, in CBS’ Bridget Loves Bernie. He played opposite

1972-73 Television Season 50th Anniversary: Bridget Loves Bernie (opening credits of final episode)

As we march through the month of March, we are reaching that time when many older series reach the end of the line, and we're taking a moment this month to pay tribute to them and reflect. In addition, we're also taking a moment this weekend to pay tribute to a brand new CBS series from the fall of 1972, which had a short life - just one season.
That show was Bridget Loves Bernie, starring new comers Meredith Baxter and David Birney. the show aired its final episode on March 3, 1973. We share with you the final episode title sequence and opening scene and credits... directed by Bill Bixby! As we noted last fall, we also love the opening title sequence and the 'Two for the Road' animation.
What made the pairing of Baxter and Birney so charming was that they had also become an item off camera, providing that extra chemistry on screen. CBS had something special on their hands, and so they gave this new series the hammock spot on their Saturday night lineup, placing Bridgett Loves Bernie in the 8:30pm slot between hits All in the Family and The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
All looked good, but ratings just didn't come together. For whatever reason, viewers tuned out at 8:30 pm at the end of All in the Family, and returned at 9:00 pm for the start of The Mary Tyler Moore Show.
Back in the fall, we noted this series premiere (a really charming episode), and didn't get into too many of the details of what may have gone wrong for the series. Now, as we look back in spring at the series end, we can provide more details. Certainly the expectations for the show where high, and the spot on the primetime lineup in the 'hammock' position between two established hit series gave great hope for the series.
However, the show ran into a great backlash from the Jewish community (not all, but from some) regarding the way religion in general, and the Jewish faith in particular, were depicted on the show. Off camera, the producers, and series star, Meredith Baxter received some threats and unexpected negativity from religious groups. Privately, CBS brass was approached and encouraged to cancel the show.
After the one season, and twenty four episodes, Bridget Loves Bernie left the air and was canceled. Good things would come to the cast... Meredith Baxter Birney would go on to star in the ABC family drama Family at the end of the decade, and would go on to star in one NBC's best and most successful comedies of the 1980s, Family Ties. Note- she also had done a pilot called 'Young Love' for CBS just prior to Bridget Loves Bernie. She had star quality from day one. Alas, that pilot did not get picked up to series.
David Birney would go to guest star in many television series, including a really fine guest role in McMillan & Wife. The couple would marry and have twins.
David Doyle would go on to work on the ABC hit series Charlie's Angels mid-decade, and Audra Lindley would go on to work on the ABC hit series Three's Company later in the decade.
A half century later, the show still has a warm and pleasant vibe to it, and although some of the comedy bits may seem a bit 'heavy-handed' when viewed in 2023, the show still has a warm glow to it, and the cast, particularly Baxter and Birney were golden.
More on the series later this weekend.
This video clip is presented here on YouTube for the entertainment and informational value of the viewer, and no copyright infringement is intended. Our thanks to Decades TV channel for running special weekend-long marathon's (as they did for Bridget Loves Bernie last year) for under appreciated and not often seen (due to their limited episode volume) vintage television series.
Enjoy.
