Glynis Johns (born 5 October 1923) is a British stage and film actress, dancer, pianist and singer. She is best known for creating the role of Desiree Armfeldt in A Little Night Music on Broadway, for which she won a Tony Award, and for playing Winifred Banks in Walt Disney's musical motion picture box office smash Mary Poppins. In both roles, she originated songs written specifically for her, including "Send in the Clowns", composed by Stephen Sondheim, and "Sister Suffragette", written by the Sherman Brothers.
Early life
Johns was born in Pretoria, South Africa, the daughter of Alys Maude (née Steele-Payne; died 1971), a pianist, and Mervyn Johns (1899–1992), the British stage and film actor. Her roots are in West Wales, and she was born in Pretoria while her parents were performing on tour there. She attended Clifton High School in Bristol for a short time. Her ancestors on the Johns side are recorded as living at the farm Glanmorlais Uchaf, Trimsaran, Carmarthenshire in 1701.
Released in 1997, Bread and Jam for Frances is the second album by Switchblade Symphony. It was recorded at Brilliant Studios in San Francisco and Private Island Trax in Hollywood and mastered at Private Island Trax. The original CD artwork erroneously listed 15 tracks, with "Harpsichord" at track 7, though that song was not on the CD and later pressings corrected the error.
Track listing (as seen on original cover)
Witches
Roller Coaster
Dirty Dog
Situation #58
Soldiers
Sleep
Harpsichord
Funnel
Insect
Rampid
Situation #9
Sheep
Fractal
Sick Mary
Episode G15
Actual track listing (which contradicts the cover)
Hoban was born in Lansdale, Pennsylvania, just outside Philadelphia, to Jewish immigrants from Ostrog (now in Ukraine). His father, Abram T. Hoban, was the advertising manager of the Yiddish-languageJewish Daily Forward and the director of The Drama Guild of the Labor Institute of the Workmen's Circle of Philadelphia. His father died when Russell was 11, and Russell was raised by his mother, Jeanette Dimmerman. He was named for Russell Conwell. After briefly attending Temple University, he enlisted in the Army at age 18 and served in the Philippines and Italy as a radio operator during World War II, earning a bronze star. During his military service he married Lillian Aberman, who later became a writer and illustrator herself. They had four children before divorcing in 1975.

Reviews 25: Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban
In this video I talk about Russell Hoban's 1980 sci-fi novel, Riddley Walker.
This Guardian article offers a good summary of the pleasures of this novel: https://www.theguardian.com/books/booksblog/2017/nov/07/worth-the-trubba-making-sense-of-riddley-walkers-language
Other works mentioned during the course of this video:
Zora Neale Hurston, And Their Eyes Were Watching God
Literary terms used and the critics who coined them:
the time of the narration (Gerard Genette)
skaz (Boris Eikhenbaum
eye dialect (George Philip Krapp)
delayed decoding (Ian Watt)
Note: There's the obvious comparison between the invented language of Riddley Walker and Anthony Burgess's A Clockwork Orange. These two books are so frequently mentioned together that I felt it was not worth going over the same groun...

Russell Hoban in conversation with Will Self

The conversation marked the 30th anniversary of Russell Hoban’s novel remarkable novel Riddley Walker - composed entirely in an archaic future-pidgin English. It depicted a post-apocalyptic Britain in the far future. Long after a nuclear holocaust (‘the 1 big 1’), humanity has reverted to a near medieval state. Ignorance and superstition have replaced the old "clevvness" and the English language has degraded into a patois that retains fragments of past knowledge, wrapped up in folklore. Twelve year old Riddley Walker roams around war-ravaged Kent trying to piece together what happened around Doomsday, and comes across a plot to rekindle the atom bomb.
Russell Hoban talked to Will Self about his unique novel and its language, as well as his wider work.
Russell Hoban (1925-2011) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and moved permanently to London in 1969. He started writing at an early age, winning prizes for his stories and poems during his school years. He served in the US Army during the Second World War, earning a Bronze Star, and later worked as an illustrator in advertising. He thought and wrote in an extraordinary range of genres, becoming first a bestselling writer of children's books, particularly the immortal Frances stories and his first novel, The Mouse and His Child (1968) This was later made into an animated film, featuring the voices of Peter Ustinov and Chloris Leachman.. After its publication he continued to write for children (most notably perhaps the Captain Najork books with Quentin Blake and The Marzipan Pig), but focussed most of his energies on a sequence of wonderful novels including Kleinzeit (1974), Pilgermann (1983), The Medusa Frequency (1987), Amaryllis Night and Day (2001) and Angelica Lost and Found (2010). Riddley Walker, published in 1980, was his biggest publishing success, making the bestseller lists in the US and garnering several awards including the John W. Campbell Memorial Award in 1982, and the Australian Science Fiction Achievement Award in 1983. He also wrote the libretto for Harrison Birtwistle's opera The Second Mrs Kong (1994). Russell continued working and writing until his death in December 2011. In spring 2021 Penguin Modern Classics embarked on a major re-issue programme of Russell’s major novels for adults, including Riddley Walker.
Will Self is a novelist, short story writer and cultural and political commentator. He has written 11 novels, five collections of shorter fiction, three novellas and five collections of non-fiction writing. He wrote an introduction to the 2002 edition of Riddley Walker, and in his own The Book Of Dave he employs a similar future demotic English called Mokni.

Frances doesn't want to eat anything but Jam and Bread for all her meals. Instead of getting mad at her the brilliant parents decide to serve her nothing but Jam and Bread. She starts to get tired of the same food and realizes through others she's missing out on some good food. It all works out in the end.

Riddley Walker by Russell Hoban - Vintage SF Book Recommendation #shorts #bookrecommendations #sciencefictionbooks #sf #sciencefiction #scifi #booktube #booktubesff #vintagebook #scifibooks
These two books are so frequently mentioned together that I felt it was not worth going over the same ground. In fact, in its sense of immediacy, I would suggest that Knut Hamsun's Hunger is closer in spirit to Hoban's novel.

The Serpentine Gallery Map Marathon, the fifth in the Serpentine Gallery's series of Marathons, celebrated a number of key anniversaries: the 40th anniversary of the Serpentine Gallery, the 10th anniversary of the annual architecture commission, the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, and the 2500th anniversary of the first, original Marathon, in 490 B.C.
This event was recorded at The British Library on Wednesday 2 February 2011. It accompanied the Library’s exhibition Evolving English: One Language, Many Voices.
