The expression "literary Brat Pack" refers to a group of young American authors, primarily including Bret Easton Ellis, Tama Janowitz and Jay McInerney, who emerged on the country's east coast in the 1980s. It is a twist on the label brat pack that had previously been applied to a group of young American actors earlier that decade.
A 1987 article in the New York newspaper Village Voice, presented the authors as the new faces of literature. Intended pejoratively, the nickname was illustrated by an image that collaged the authors faces onto the bodies of infants. Yet their impact on literature and their vast popularity rendered this nickname an affectionate branding of the new wave of young minimalist authors. Each presented a particular challenge to established literary criticism: McInerney's debut novel, Bright Lights, Big City, was told entirely in second-person singular. Janowitz's Slaves of New York explored themes of sexual politics against a backdrop of New York's peculiarities rendered honestly, and Ellis's Less Than Zero chronicled a post-adolescent disconnect with society that seemed shocking and pathological.
The actors themselves were known to dislike the label. Many of their careers peaked in the mid-1980s but had interruptions afterward for various reasons. However, the films they starred in together are frequently referenced in popular culture and are regarded as some of the most influential of their time.
Brat Pack was released as a limited series in 1990–1991.
Plot
The events of Brat Pack take place in the fictional city of Slumburg, Pennsylvania. The plot involves the efforts of Slumberg's various heroes, known collectively as Black October, to recruit new sidekicks—the original group of sidekicks having been killed by the villain Doctor Blasphemy.
Underlying the plot is the recurring element of the heroes being aware of their public popularity and the success of the comic books and merchandise based on their lives and adventures. Neil Gaiman characterizes Brat Pack's pastiche of cynical commercialism this way: "The corporations, after all, own the characters. Remember: Batman isn't simply a comics character: he's a movie star, a lunchbox pin-up, a licensing goldmine. You mess with Batman and Warner Entertainment gets worried. You screw with Spider-Man, and watch Revlon get upset."

The term “Brat Pack” was first coined in 1985 in a New York magazine article written by David Blum, and it referred to the young actors who appeared in films like St. Elmo’s Fire, The Outsiders and The Breakfast Club. There are plenty of other films from the time that are thought of as Brat Pack films as well (many directed or produced by Breakfast Club director John Hughes), but it was these two 1985 films that defined the group.
Sadly, the moniker would typecast the actors a bit, and some struggled to find success into the 1990s and 2000s. Let's Remember The Brat Pack. Included are Rob Lowe, Anthony Michael Hall, Demi Moore, Andrew McCarthy, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy and Emilio Estevez.
