Brasil, also known as Hy-Brasil or several other variants, is a phantom island said to lie in the Atlantic Ocean west of Ireland. Irish myths described it as cloaked in mist except for one day every seven years, when it became visible but still could not be reached.
Etymology of the name
The etymology of the names Brasil and Hy-Brasil is unknown, but in Irish tradition it is thought to come from the Irish Uí Breasail (meaning "descendants (i.e., clan) of Breasal"), one of the ancient clans of northeastern Ireland. cf.Old Irish: Í: island; bres: beauty, worth, great, mighty.
Despite the similarity, the name of the country Brazil has no connection to the mythical islands. The South American country was at first named Ilha de Vera Cruz (Island of the True Cross) and later Terra de Santa Cruz (Land of the Holy Cross) by the Portuguese navigators who discovered the land. After some decades, it started to be called "Brazil" (Brasil, in Portuguese) due to the exploitation of native Brazilwood, at that time the only export of the land. In Portuguese, brazilwood is called pau-brasil, with the word brasil commonly given the etymology "red like an ember", formed from Latinbrasa ("ember") and the suffix -il (from -iculum or -ilium).
Brasil is the fourth album by hardcore band Ratos de Porão, which was released in 1989 through Roadrunner Records. Considered by many fans the masterpiece of Ratos' discography, this record was the passport to the world scene. It was recorded in Berlin, and produced by Harris Johns, who produced bands such Tankard and Exumer. This can be considered as a true crossover album, mixing hardcore and metal. Available in Portuguese and English versions.
The 2014 FIFA World Cup was the 20th FIFA World Cup, the quadrennial world championship for men's nationalfootball teams organized by FIFA. It took place in Brazil from 12 June to 13 July 2014, after the country was awarded the hosting rights in 2007. It was the second time that Brazil staged the competition (the first was in 1950), and the fifth time that it was held in South America.
Thirty-one national teams advanced through qualification competitions to join the host nation in the final tournament. A total of 64 matches were played in 12 venues located in as many host cities across Brazil. For the first time at a World Cup finals, match officials used goal-line technology, as well as vanishing foam for free kicks.FIFA Fan Fests in each host city gathered a total of 5 million people, and the country received 1 million visitors from 202 countries.
Every World Cup-winning team since the first edition in 1930 – Argentina, Brazil, England, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Uruguay – qualified for this tournament. Spain, the title holders, were eliminated at the group stage, along with England and Italy. Uruguay were eliminated in the round of 16, and France exited in the quarter-finals. Brazil, who had won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup, lost to Germany in the semi-finals and eventually finished in fourth place. In the final, Germany defeated Argentina 1–0 to win the tournament and secure the country's fourth world title, the first after the German reunification in 1990, when as West Germany they also beat Argentina in the World Cup final.
Germany became the first European team to win a World Cup staged in the Americas, and this result marked the first time that sides from the same continent had won three consecutive tournaments (following Italy in 2006 and Spain in 2010).
Student of Sufi poetry and belly dance in Cairo, Dunia is looking for herself and wishes to become a professional dancer. During a casting for a dance contest, she meets the illustrious and charming Dr Bechir, a Sufi thinker and writer. With him, Dunia will discover not only the pleasure of words through Sufi poetry, but also the pleasure of the senses. However, she will have to confront tradition, which destroyed her capacity to feel pleasure, in order to free her body and dance with her soul.
The final of a competition is the match or round in which the winner of the entire event is decided.
In sports competitions following a knockout system, where only two individuals or teams compete in each match, the final is usually played between the winners of two semi-finals. However, if more than two entrants are required for each match, then qualification for the final may be through some other process such as winning heats.
The final is usually, but not always, the last match in a tournament to be played, and the winner of this match is declared the winner of the whole tournament. In many contests, the winner(s) and runner(s)-up receive gold and silver medals respectively. Another game, or competition, between the two players who lost in the semi-finals is done to determine who receives the bronze medal. Unusually, many teams (32 in recent years) qualify for the FIFA World Cup finals. These teams then play each other in various formats until the ultimate two 'finalists' play off for the gold and silver medals.

IS THE ISLAND OF HY BRASIL REAL? Famous mistakes on old maps | A phantom island | History Calling
Today we ask, is the island of HY BRASIL real, or is this one of many famous mistakes on old maps and an example of a phantom island? The evidence for and therefore the history of the island of Hy Brasil, is rooted in its appearance on old maps from the 14th to the 19th centuries, but despite numerous expeditions to find it, it has never been located. Thanks to cartographers’ persistence in showing it however (usually off the west coast of Ireland and sometimes joined by the equally fanciful island of Mayda, aka Demar), along with some reported sightings and the occasional work of fiction dressed up as fact, an entire legend has grown up around what is supposedly a paradise inhabited by an old living in a castle and black rabbits and which only appears out of the mist on one day every seve...

Hy-Brasil the Irish Atlantis - ROBERT SEPEHR
Europe is filled with myths and legends about ancient civilizations that were said to have existed long ago. The most obvious example is the story of Atlantis, made famous by Plato. Other legends speak of inhabited regions to the north, such as Hyperborea, which was allegedly populated by a race of giants. According to Irish folklore an island named Hy-Brasil was located off of the west coast of Ireland, and although it was never officially found, the Island continued to appear on maps until at least 1873. The name derives from the Celtic word Breasal meaning ‘High king of the world’.

Today we ask, is the island of HY BRASIL real, or is this one of many famous mistakes on old maps and an example of a phantom island? Thanks to cartographers’ persistence in showing it however (usually off the west coast of Ireland and sometimes joined by the equally fanciful island of Mayda, aka Demar), along with some reported sightings and the occasional work of fiction dressed up as fact, an entire legend has grown up around what is supposedly a paradise inhabited by an old living in a castle and black rabbits and which only appears out of the mist on one day every seven years. What seems more likely is that was one of the countless mistakes on maps created before modern navigational instruments and that that the mythical island of Hy Brazil (as it is also sometimes spelt) is just that, a myth.
In this video from History Calling, we look at the evidence for the island of Hy-Brasil, including some beautiful old maps and written publications, as well as what modern science shows us through satellite images from NASA. Maps studied will include the Mapamondi of 1387, a portolan chart of Europe by Grazioso Benincasa from 1470, an image created by Abraham Ortelius (1570) and a 1769 map of Europe. By the end of the video we’ll have an answer to the question, what is Hy Brasil? Island, rock or legend? This video will also include a discussion of the famous but fictional story which many mistakenly cite as though it’s a real historical source, ‘O-Brazile or The inchanted island’. This was published in 1675 and written by Richard Head, but attributed to the invented figure of William Hamilton.

Ireland’s Phantom Island of Atlantis, Only Visible Every 7 Years (Hy-Brasil)
This is a map of Ireland and Europe today. This is Abraham Ortelius' map of Ireland and Europe from 1595. Do you notice anything different about these maps? Although there may be a few differences, the main focus of today is this mysterious island depicted just off the coast of Ireland in the 1595 map, spelt Brafil.
Although this island has various spellings down through history, it is known most commonly as Hy-Brasil, an island that is said to lie just to the west of Ireland in the Atlantic Ocean. The name is said to come from an Irish name (Uí Breasail) meaning "descendants (i.e., clan) of Bresail," an ancient clan of Ireland, whose name may come from a word meaning beauty or mighty, or it may mean the High King of the world.
One of the strange things about this island is that it appeared in numerous maps. As far back as 1325, nautical maps identified an island called Bracile just west of Ireland. The island appeared in countless maps under slightly different names for centuries, including in Abraham Ortelius' map of Europe in 1595. It is often depicted as being circular with a river running east-west across it’s diameter. By 1865, it was referred to as Brasil Rock on many maps.
Stories and myths about the island abound. One is that the island is shrouded in clouds of mist and it can only be seen for one day every seven years, but it can’t be reached. It has been described as a place where saints lived or where an advanced civilization dwelt.
Is this island purely a phantom mythical island however, or is there any seed of truth to it? In the 15th century, expeditions left Bristol is search of the island. A letter written by the Spanish diplomat, Pedro de Ayala, who was employed by Ferdinand II of Aragon, stated that the 1497 expedition by the Italian explorer John Cabot found land "discovered in the past by the men from Bristol who found Brasil." Numerous other expeditions left in search of the island, but returned months later with nothing to show.
In the 17th century, a Captain John Nisbet claimed to have seen the island when on a journey from France to Ireland, noting that Hy-Brasil was inhabited by large black rabbits and a magician who lived in a stone castle, yet this story turned out to be an invention of Richard Head, an Irish author and playwright. A sighting of the island was described as late as 1872 by Robert O’Flaherty and T.J. Westropp, with Westropp claiming that he brought his family with him.
What is interesting is that Hy-Brasil has been linked to the Porcupine Bank, an area of the Irish shelf that broadly the location where Hy-Brasil was depicted in maps. Could this be where the seed of truth lies? Did explorers and navigators know that there was something in this general area, and someone decided to draw an island one day? The Porcupine Bank is a relatively raised area of seabed, around 200m below sea level at its highest.
The island is sometimes referred to as Ireland’s Atlantis, an island that was home to a great civilization that was swallowed by the sea, as described by the Athenian philosopher, Plato, in his book Timaeus, published around 360 BC. This will be the subject of my next video…

The evidence for and therefore the history of the island of Hy Brasil, is rooted in its appearance on old maps from the 14th to the 19th centuries, but despite numerous expeditions to find it, it has never been located.
