Brand Management is an ongoing operational activity in a business, that maintains and grows a consistent brand identity – with the intent of enhancing Brand Equity.
Brand Management ensures that everything aligns with your desired branding:
• products
• content
• communication
• events
• sub-brands
• stylistic elements
So, brand management creates a blueprint for the brand. It provides the whole organization with the research, guidelines, and strategies to effectively enhance the brand’s reputation with customers, from digital collateral to physical products and human interactions.
Brand Management and Marketing
If brand management is the blueprint - or guidelines - for maintaining your brand, marketing is how you put that plan into action.
So, Brand Management uses an array of marketing tools and techniques to increase the perceived value of a brand (Brand Equity).
It builds loyal customers through positive associations and images or a strong awareness of the brand. Thus, it allows the company to:
1. Reduce the cost of sales
2. Increase the market pricing of products
3. Bounce back from circumstantial crisis
The Brand Management process starts by identifying the core value of a particular brand and reflecting the core value among the targeted customers.
The key steps of Brand Management:
1. Define the vision, values, personality, and big idea behind your company or product. This tells you the core value of a particular brand
2. Determine the personality traits that go with the brand. This allows you to reflect the core value among the targeted customers
3. Find words and language that describe it
a. product name
b. tagline or motto
c. phrases
d. tone of voice
4. Craft a visual identity that symbolizes it
a. Colors
b. Fonts
c. graphic style
5. Set out the behaviors and cultural norms that will reinforce the brand
6. Use it all consistently in physical spaces, online, and in marketing and advertising
7. Be true to your brand, in your attitudes, interactions, and decisions – and enforce that consistency in all of the company’s (and its partners) interactions with the customers
RECOMMENDED EXERCISE
1. Look at the organization you work for. What Brand Management activities are you aware of? And which ones can you not discern? (2 MC CPD Points)
2. If you were in control of the management of your organization's brand, what activities would you change? (2 MC CPD Points)

Brand management is near the top of the list when it comes to misunderstood marketing roles. People tend to think it’s all celebrity advertising shoots and design boards.
The reality is that a brand manager operates much more like a general manager. You need to direct the work of others and leverage great specialists on your internal and external teams.
If you love and want to dive into one particular area of marketing such as advertising, media planning, research, social media, strategy, design or shopper marketing—that’s good, too. It means you might make a great specialist.
Unfortunately, most marketers I know haven’t figured out what they really want to do… even into their 40s and 50s.
One of the best things you can do early in your marketing career is to experiment and try new things. Too many young marketers get trapped into a single corporate ladder because they feel that’s what’s expected of them. But it keeps them from getting a feel for all of the options they have.
If you don’t love the work you are doing, then make a change. Try something you’re interested in. It will only help you figure things out much sooner.

Brand management is a process that begins by examining how a brand is perceived by the public, and then it takes all those insights, that intelligence, and uses this to build a good brand reputation within the target market.
And it’s actually really important to your sales too, because when a brand is very well-managed, the brand equity increases, which means that your brand loyalty also increases --- and a strong brand can even carry your product. For example, take the famous Pepsi Challenge. Over the last decade, Coca Cola’s market share has risen from 17.3% to 17.8%, while Pepsi’s market share has dropped from 10.3% to 8.4%. However, in a series of blind taste tests conducted by Pepsi, the results suggested that consumers actually prefer the taste of Pepsi, even though most of them were buying Coke. This is why brand management is so important, because having a strong brand is something that can definitely influence purchasing decisions and increase your sales in the long run.
So how do you do brand management? Or what’s a good brand management strategy? You know, I don’t want to get off track (but I have a story) --- I recently went on this podcast hosted by a couple of guys who work in tech and ecommerce (that’s Johnathan and Dillon from Welcome to Growth) and we were talking about, of all things, brand management. So, of course, the question “how do you approach brand management?” comes up. Now, I had this totally smart explanation in here (point to head) but, for the life of me, I could barely get anything coherent to come out here (point to mouth)... it was pure audio stagefright! These guys were really nice --- I think I’ve just forgotten how to interact with people on any level after these past few months... yeah… (sorry, guys)... so I’m gonna take this chance to try to redeem myself, by explaining what a brand management strategy looks like here:
So, because you want to start by examining public perception of your brand, this makes awareness a key part of brand management --- NOT to be confused with “brand awareness”, which is generally about how well people can recognize and recall your brand. Here, I mean your awareness about how the public sees your brand.
And this all starts with collecting data. So, for brand management, this means that you want to collect all kinds of feedback and opinions that people are expressing about your brand. And, again, unlike brand awareness, which is focused on the number of those opinions, brand management looks at context, because this is exactly what shows you how a brand is perceived.
Looking at context is something you should do anyway, because it answers a lot of questions: it shows you where your brand is doing a really good job at eliciting positive feelings and positive sentiment from the public… and it also shows you where it might be rubbing people the wrong way and causing them to develop some negative sentiment toward it. That’s why this part of brand management --- just gathering all the data and then looking at the context around it --- is really essential to your strategy. Without these insights, it’s hard to know where you need to make improvements.
