The Mary McAleese Boyne Valley Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge in County Meath, Ireland. It spans the Boyne River3 kilometres (1.9mi) west of Drogheda on the county boundary between County Meath and County Louth and is part of the M1 Northern Motorway. When it opened in June 2003, it was the longest cable-stayed bridge in Ireland until 19 October 2009, when the River Suir Bridge opened on the N25.
Due to environmental concerns, an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) was carried out for the bridge separately from the M1 EIS—the first such formal EIS carried out and published for a bridge in Ireland. The bridge was built from 2000 to 2003 and was designed by Roughan and O'Donovan, who were awarded the ACEI Presidential Award in 2005 for the design.
Overview
Designing a road bridge over the Boyne was not an easy task. At the chosen point, 3 kilometres (1.9mi) upstream from Drogheda, the ground level on the south is elevated, with a sudden drop while the north bank slopes gradually down to the river. The area is environmentally sensitive, especially the reed beds on the north bank and the flora and fauna of Yellow Island in the middle of the river. The area has a rich heritage as it is also situated adjacent to the area in which the Battle of the Boyne took place in 1690.
The river begins at Wilcox Lake and flows north under the Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway line. It passes through Flesherton Community Pond at the community of Flesherton, then exits the pond over a weir and passes under Ontario Highway 10. It continues north and starts to descend the Niagara Escarpment by passing over the Hoggs Falls, named after William Hogg, takes in the right tributary Flesherton Creek, and continues downhill to its mouth at the Beaver River west of the community of Eugenia. The Beaver River flows to Georgian Bay on Lake Huron.
The headwaters of the river rise in the Bobby Range, within the Great Dividing Range southwest of Miriam Vale. The river descends from the western slopes of the range and flows generally north by east parallel with the Gladstone-Monto Road through the Boyne Valley. The river enters Lake Awoonga where it flows east by north, crossed by the Bruce Highway near Riverview, and finally discharging into the Port Curtis and the Coral Sea. The river descends 371 metres (1,217ft) over its 125-kilometre (78mi)course, joined by thirteen tributaries from source to river mouth. The mouth is located between the twin towns of Boyne Island and Tannum Sands. A bridge was built to cross the river joining the two towns in 1980.
The river is dammed by the Awoonga Dam which is the major water source for the Gladstone region. The river has a catchment area of 2,496 square kilometres (964sqmi) of which 49 square kilometres (19sqmi) are riverine wetlands and 17 square kilometres (7sqmi) are estuarine wetlands.
