The historic Obelisk Bridge outside Drogheda will reopen to traffic today after nine months of refurbishment works.

The 154-year old bridge closed last August in order for essential structural works to be carried out.

The bridge reopens at 2.30pm.

It allows motorists cross the River Boyne without having to go into Drogheda town centre or use the motorway.

Campaigners had complained that the closure of the bridge meant motorists faced paying toll charges to use the motorway, or end up in heavy traffic through Drogheda.

Locals also complained of the diversion adding to the already heavily congested town.

Those most affected by the closure were people living in the immediate vicinity of the bridge in Tullyallen and Donore.

It is also frequently used by tourists and visitors going to the Battle of the Boyne site nearby.

Extensive works were carried out, including the installation of replacement cross beams, a new road surface and reconstruction of approach and departure walls on the south of the bridge.

Louth County Council has advised the public that a 5-tonne weight restriction is still in place.
